If this afternoon sunshine doesn't have you thinking about a scenic road trip, you might want to clean your windows! We looked to our experts at the Center and friends from Texas Highways Magazine: The Official Travel Magazine of Texas and Texas Monthly (and our favorite guidebooks and websites) for these recommended routes throughout the state with local blooms, scenic vistas, worthwhile detours and a bit of history, too. Happy snapping, and send us a postcard!

Factor in the nine major ecoregions and weather ranging from flood to drought, and the result is 5,000 species of flowering plants that are native to the Lone Star s…

This video shows rainwater flowing into a sinkhole (a karst landscape feature) on the Wildflower Center grounds. The sinkhole, along with our ephemeral creek and the cave on the Savanna Meadow, are visible signs that the Center is part of a recharge area for the Edwards Aquifer. It takes as little as two days for water to travel through the limestone and underground system from here to Barton Springs!

It's so lovely to see the rain lilies (Cooperia pedunculata) emerging in the fields, if only for a short stay. Are they blooming in your neighborhood too?

Behold the ephemeral prairie celestial (Nemastylis geminiflora)! These sky-blue flowers open in late morning and curl up before 3 p.m., even on overcast days. Each flower only lasts one day. Once the seed has ripened, the bulb is renewed and the plant disappears until the following spring!

Water flowing in the creek near our Family Garden is a site many visitors may have never seen! We'll feature information about the watershed later in this wet week, but for now enjoy a little ‪#‎MondayMeditation‬ .

Critter Friday: A Gulf Coast toad (Incilius valliceps) recently popped up to say hello at the Wildflower Center. Like most toads, this big-eyed bugger will eat most any arthropod it can swallow, so it may have been looking for lunch. Learn more about Gulf Coast toads here: http://eol.org/pages/330794/details, and pay us a visit to see some critters in person! http://www.wildflower.org/visit.php

Critter Friday: Peek-a-boo! This redstripe ribbon snake (Thamnophis proximus rubrilineatus) is a subspecies of western ribbon ‪#‎snake‬ that can be found only in the Edward's Plateau in Texas. These non-poisonous garter snakes mainly hunt at night and eat frogs, salamanders, tadpoles and other small critters. But they are also active during the day, so keep an eye out. ‪#‎critterfriday‬ ‪#‎wildlife‬
