Making the US Government More Open and Accountable

The government released its second National Action Plan in December. OpenTheGovernment.org is helping to coordinate civil society organization's efforts to make sure the government meets its commitments, and evaluate how well the government executes the plan. To help us figure out how to create better opportunities to allow people to be involved in the project, please fill out this SURVEY.

Statement: New US National Action Plan Initiatives

The US will address four new openness issues as part of its 2014-2015 National Action Plan, honoring its promise to make the second Plan a “living document.” The new commitments largely build on the government’s new and existing data and technology initiatives. The government’s commitment to increase transparency in spending now includes the administration’s efforts to implement the DATA Act.

Updated Civil Society NAP Evaluation Timeline

Here are the key dates for the evaluation project for the next several months, during which civil society groups will complete the second evaluation and begin drafting stretch goals.

Open Government Partnership Updates

The Open Government Partnership is an international platform that requires member countries to develop national action plans to make progress on open government initiatives. Government officials must collaborate with civil society organizations (CSO) to develop and implement the plans.

OGP 2014 and 2015: Evaluation and Analysis Timeline

To ensure momentum and meaningful implementation over the next two years, OTG has tweaked our evaluation approach and proposes to do smaller “check-ins” every six months on the progress of implementation and civil society engagement with government leads.

We are in the process of creating teams of individuals interested in providing feedback on and evaluating the implementation of specific commitments. In 2015, teams will work together, in coordination with OTG, to put together an evaluation similar to the first CSO evaluation

Please contact apaulson[at]openthegovernment.org if you would like to be a member of a team.

The schedule for these check-ins and the final evaluation is below, including the questions that will guide the narrative report.
