The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census of population every 10 years,
as mandated by the United States Constitution. These population
data are used to determine the number of seats each State has in the
House of Representatives, the voting district boundaries within the
States, and the allocation of Government services. In addition,
local governments and private industries use census information for
a wide variety of applications. This map layer was compiled
by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The United States Census Database, 1980 includes population information
from the year 1980 census for the United States. The information is
presented by county and includes statistics on total population; population
by gender, race, and ethnic group; and urban and rural population. The
National Atlas also includes 1990 Census Information and 2000
Census Information.
