UGA Honey Bee Program

Honey bees have been the Official State Insect of Georgia since 1975 and a subject of teaching and inquiry at the University of Georgia for decades. These marvelous insects are manageable and used to produce honey and pollinate crops. They are practical models of biological organization and social behavior.

Honey bee research at the University of Georgia addresses sustainable bee health management issues as well as more basic questions on bee pollination and foraging ecology. In all its endeavors, the UGA Honey Bee Program aims to develop research, teaching and extension initiatives that are locally responsive while globally relevant.

Honey Bee Lab email list gets a tune-up

We recently merged our YHC-UGA Bee Institute email list into our GA Bee Letter email distribution system to ensure that no one misses pertinent correspondence on a timely basis, as well as to streamline our administration.

Managed Pollinator CAP

The Managed Pollinator Coordinated Agricultural Project (CAP) is a national research and extension initiative made up of 21 funded collaborators and two advisory boards, whose long-term goal is to restore large and diverse populations of managed bee pollinators across the United States to sustain natural and agricultural plant communities. The Managed Pollinator CAP web site is hosted by the University of Georgia.

CAP related articles are jointly published in the American Bee Journal and in Bee Culture Magazine.

Pure Georgia Honey available

Pure Georgia Honey from the Honey Bee Lab is sold at two locations: Athens Seed, Lawn and Garden, Inc. (54 Greensboro Hwy., Watkinsville, Georgia) and at the UGA Department of Entomology main office (room 413, Biological Sciences). Current varieties include Sourwood, Blueberry/ Blackberry, and Wildflower.
