Background Information |
Sample Map
The Division of Reproductive Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collects information on reproductive health in the United States. The CDC provides access to geographic information that describes reproductive health indicators, and is intended to allow health service providers and policymakers to conduct analyses, to monitor trends, and to evaluate the impact of policies and programs. It uses data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. Indicators derived from the Interactive Atlas of Reproductive Health may differ from those provided by a local or State health department or an analysis performed by other published health statistics sources.
Fetal and infant mortality rates report the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births. An infant is a child between the ages of birth and 365 days. The fetal deaths include gestations of 28 weeks or longer.
The National Atlas of the United States® prepared this map layer with information drawn from the Interactive Atlas of Reproductive Health.
The Reproductive Health: Fetal and Infant Mortality, 1995-1999 map layer reports statistics for eight demographic groups: female, male, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, Black or African American, White, Hispanic or Latino, and all groups combined. The race category for fetal and infant deaths is determined for statistical purposes based on the race of the mother as reported on the birth certificate. The data set consists of three database files that are distributed together, one with county statistics, one with State statistics, and one with national statistics. The national statistics were calculated from data for the fifty States, the District of Columbia and five U.S. dependent areas (American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.) In the National Atlas, additional reproductive health data sets are available that provide statistics on live births (fertility), multiple births, preterm delivery, and maternal risks from smoking. Further general information on reproductive health is available from the CDC's Reproductive Health Information Source.
