#18 Get inspired by a First Lady

Lady Bird Johnson loved the natural world, and she loved Texas. To hav...e her welcome in Padre Island as a National Seashore was most fitting. She was the face of conservation and helped spread the message of the National Park Service while her husband was in office. She urged Americans to see their country first hand, to get out and explore their natural landscapes and National Parks. With the Centennial year of the NPS starting at the end of this month, follow in Lady Bird's footsteps and take some time out to visit your National Parks.

"I have always been a natural tourist. Lyndon used to say I kept 'one foot in the middle of the big road'. Wherever I go in America, I like it when the land speaks its own language in its own regional accent." -Lady Bird Johnson ‪#‎FindYourPark‬ (LG/BB) (NPS Photo)

'Nan Madol, Temwen Island, Pohnpei State, Micronesia

Nan Madol, known as the Venice of the Pacific, is a complex of man-made basalt islands built atop an atoll on Pohnpei's eastern coast. The name roughly translates as "between the intervals" and refers to the network of islands and canals that were the means of travel and communication for the occupants of the 200-acre site. The district's core was the seat of Pohnpei's ruling Sau Deleur dynasty in prehistoric times. Archeological investigations have helped in understanding and interpreting the development of the island's "chief" hierarchy, one of the most complex in the Pacific Islands. It was designated a NHL in 1985.
