Is English football's dismal marriage to the long ball heading towards divorce?

The side effect of this current trend is having a knock-on effect on the lack of classic English centre-forwards, as Arsene Wenger recently commented on: No long balls, no need for a big man up top to hold up play and/or knock it in. Whether this is a good thing or not, I don't know. More of a concern, I think, is how much teams now play on the counter attack. Most teams do not play like Spain or Barcelona. They play like Mourinho-era Madrid and Chelsea. Wait, let the attack break down, then pounce. Gone are the days when 2 teams would just attack. The Liverpool v Newcastle game would never happen in this era. And sadly, this means a lot of tedium at the highest level, particularly at the World Cup.

Was the Rugby League World Cup a success?

As a die-hard RL fan living in exile outside the "heartland" in deep rural Lincolnshire I was heartened by the response of the tournament. I was lucky enough enough to be invited to the semi-finals at Wembley with a school trip of 40 kids who until recently never knew the game actually existed. Seeing them cheer on every hit and try (many wearing England RL shirts) really made me hopeful for the future of the game. The RFL/RLIF must learn from the failures of the supposed Olympic Legacy and take the revenue generated and plough it into spreading the gospel across the rest of the UK and world in general. This is the only way the sport will survive and flourish in this global world.
