Winners and Losers of the Week: Food World Edition 0 comments

What do you get when a goat walks into a pizza place? This week's food world winners and losers!

Winner: Gilbert Gottfried
Yes, he was the first pseudo-celeb sent home from Rachel vs. Guy last week, but we think it's best for his career as a former insurance-selling duck to minimize association with the bizarre series. Now he can focus on more important things, like running away from random strangers that corner him on the street and beg him to say  "AFLAC!"

On a side note, fans of Kathy Najimy were elated that she bested him in a head to head elimination competition, with one of them saying "Her win was epic! It would be a tragedy to see her go when I'm so close to remembering who exactly she is."

Loser: The Pizza Goat
Technically, it's the slice-chomping farm animal's owner who's the loser, since the guy got slapped with sexual assault charges. But the famous Billy, who has made journeys to numerous NYC pie shops, saw its reputation tarnished by the fact that he was this dude's wing-goat.

Come to think of it, the accusations are not that surprising. In fact, the whole scandal reminded us of an important truism that we somehow forgot: anyone who brings a goat to a pizza place is frickin' weird.

Ethnic Eats: Ajiaco at Colombia in Park Slope 0 comments

Ajiaco, a Colombian soup particular to Bogota and its surrounding mountains, is one of the more elusive dishes to find outside its homeland. Giving definition to a “rib-sticking” soup, its emphasis on papas criollas (tiny, buttery, delicious potatoes whose starch acts as the most glorious of thickeners) along with the plethora of shredded chicken and whole chunks of corn on the cob, make it perhaps one of the most satisfying - and addictive - soups for when cold weather is here.

So with a bitter January upon us, we decided to see if we could scope a place for a decent bowl. Since many of the ingredients aren’t native to the U.S., including the aforementioned potatoes and guascas, an herb integral to the broth, it’s not going to taste quite the same as it were if you were sitting in a restaurant in Colombia. But, thankfully enough, Colombia in Park Slope was able to satisfy our cravings with their version, which contains all the creamy goodness we expect alongside traditional accompaniments like capers, avocado, and rice. The toppings are key; they let you customize your dish to your own tastes and make each bite taste different than the last. You should even ask for some crema to drizzle on top to really make a home run.

8 Questionable Celebrity Chef Endorsements 0 comments

Image via Diageo
Celebrity endorsement can be a veritable minefield for both company and endorser. Accepting $50 million to appear in cola ads would seem like a no-brainer to most people, but when Beyonce Knowles’ deal with Pepsi was announced recently, the pop-star courted criticism from those - like Mark Bittman - who argue that it’s irresponsible for stars to promote products as unhealthy as soda. But Knowles was neither the first nor last star to straddle the awkward line between celebrity and role model. In fact, the last year has borne witness to the sloppy fallout of several uncomfortable endorsements...

Photo of the Day: The Hot Freddy 0 comments

Brrr. All day we've been listening to our East Coast and Midwest friends talk about how mild this 50-degree winter day is, while everyone we know here can't stop complaining about how cold our 50-degree winter day is. Personally, we don't mind when a chill hits LA; it just gives us more reason to drink hot cocktails and sit by a fireplace, maybe both together if we're lucky. Since today is National Hot Toddy Day, here's another entry to sip tonight should you choose: Freddy Smalls' Hot Freddy, a warm scented concoction of Amaro Nonino, wildflower honey, lemon, bitters and Earl Grey tea. Mmm...toasty.

Henry's Tacos Closing for Good This Weekend 1 comments

Well, it seems Henry's Tacos owner Jannis Hood has tired of the game. She's throwing in the woel after service on January 12. According to the Digest blog, Hood was unable to find a resolution with the landlord, even though one of her longtime employees was ready to take over the business. She says that they'll continue to find a new home for the stand, and we hope that means the amazing sign goes with her.

Get your last taste of crispy tacos on Saturday from 9 AM-9 PM, or until goods run out. And there's a good chance that might happen - there have been celeb-backed rallies and crazy long waits since the news broke about Henry's fate.

Beer News: Angel City Brewery Readies, New Brewer at Golden Road 0 comments

Angel City's taproom is shaping up
Our local beer brewing scene continues to get better and better, and it's almost impossible to keep up with everything that's going on. Under construction for what seems like years now (although new owners took it over last year), Angel City Brewing is on track to open the public in the next few months. According to the LAT, the fully refurbished tap room will be unveiled first, and brewmaster Dieter Foerstner continues to roll out new beers that are showing up on taps around town.

Over at Golden Road Brewing, Jesse Houck has replaced Jon Carpenter as brewmaster. Houck, who met GR president Meg Gill at SF's 21st Amendment Brewery several years ago, was most recently head brewer for Drake's Brewing Company in San Leandro. He'll continue on the IPA and canned beer route, but also expanding GR's craft beer repertoire.

Txoko Reopens as Naked Lunch Pub & Grill 0 comments

Despite the name and red-light district in address, Naked Lunch Pub & Grill, the spanking new reconcepted all-day/late-night pub from is not a clothing-optional joint but rather newest incarnation of North Beach's once legendary Enrico’s and more recently the short-lived Txoko which closed after New Years Eve. 30 Under 30-chef Ian Begg and partner Ryan Maxey have essentially expanded their adjacent to-go lunchtime Naked Lunch business into the larger space where they continue to crank out the same high-end sandwiches and snacks along with new dishes such as a burger with fries; the formal dining room remains the same (with the same whimsical Jeremy Fish dancing pigs mural and long communal tables), but the duo have added new pool tables and TVs, and most importantly, a bar program that includes draft beer, wine and classic cocktails, thus living up to its “pub” moniker.

Naked Lunch Pub & Grill opened today for regular service (11:30 AM- ”late”), but will be hosting a special opening night party tonight with $2 PBR and $4 draft beers starting at 4 PM, with DJ Jon Blunck from the Sweaterfunk nightclub spinning old-school funk later in the evening. (504 Broadway, 415-577-4951; note the kitchen is closed between 2- 5PM).

More on Sirena, Now Open on Beverly 0 comments

The Sirena bar
Here's a little more info about Sirena, the new "coastal Mediterranean" spot that opened in the storied Pane e Vino space last night. As noted yesterday, the trio behind it is Michael Sutton, Porta Via's Peter Garland and Pace's Sandy Gendel. That's a lot of history right there, considering how long the three have been in the restaurant busines (more than 40 years between them).

"There's been a variety of different reactions from those who've attempted it, some go really pale or break into a sweat and give in. Whereas others go for a walk round the restaurant to try and make room for some more or order a soft drink to wash it down but all have thrown the towel in, in the end."

The General Debuts on The Bowery, Completing Mega Nightlife Complex 0 comments

The General; Photo by Gary Landsman
It's official, the Bowery has been completely swankified. This week, EMM Group debuted The General, the final piece of a sprawling new complex in the space that used to house Crash Mansion. EMM are the folks behind Catch in the Meatpacking District and they should have no problem filling this sprawling 300 seat room. Like at their MPD hot spot, Top Chef winner Hung Huynh is manning the stoves here. He's conceived a huge menu of Asian dishes ranging from dumplings and buns to large format dishes like beef and broccoli with braised bone-in short rib.

The restaurant joins two of last year's hottest club openings, Bow and Finale, on the property. It's sure to draw over the trendy crowds who may be more accustomed to stomping around on the Meatpacking cobblestone streets. If you're looking for something to do this weekend, well, here you go. Take a look at the menu below the jump (199 Bowery).

Kosher Goes Gourmet at Bubby’s Cook-Off on January 23 0 comments

Salmon from Citron and Rose
Keeping kosher is not an easy feat - meat and dairy can’t touch, all fruit and veggies must be inspected, the kitchen must be blessed, etc. On January 23, five of Philly’s best chefs will put their culinary skills to the kashrut test at a fund-raiser hosted by the Lubavitch of Bucks County. Set to take place at Vie (right next to Route 6 on North Broad), Bubby’s Cook-Off will headline a gala party with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, wine pairings and samples.

Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Breakfast Pancake at Chez Sardine 0 comments

When you think Japanese pancake, okonomiyaki may immediately come to mind, but at recent West Village arrival Chez Sardine, you'll find something a tad different (though just as delicious). It may not be traditional, but given that we grew up in a hapa household with this sort of food, it suits us just fine. One of our favorite dishes at this inauthentic izakaya was the breakfast pancake - think silver-dollar sized flapjacks served with assorted fish tartare, salmon roe and yogurt. The roe gives a nice hint of salt, which works well with the slightly sweet pancakes and creamy yogurt, while the tartare adds a pleasant texture and bite to the dish. Initially you may suspect the ingredients won't meld together, but given that caviar has been long served with bellini pancakes, it's no surprise that indeed, it's a success  ($15; 646-360-3705).

LA Bacon Fest Hits Town Next Month 0 comments

Just when you thought bacon was over (not us), someone comes along and creates an entire event around it. Not to be confused with Cochon 555, which returns to LA this spring, the inaugural LA Bacon Fest pulls together a mash of sweet and savory dishes from places like Grub, Mendocino Farms, Mess Hall, Slater's 50/50, Chris Cosentino's Pigg at Umamicatessen and more. It all goes down at the Petersen Car Museum on February 9. Tickets are $40 for food and entry to the museum, and $60 for VIP entrance and cocktail tastings.

A Taste Tour of TASTE at Figat7th: Juicy Lucy, Oleego and More 0 comments

It's not everyday we'd go traipsing through a mall food court to find good food, but with all the new chef-driven spots opening at the upgraded Figat7th complex in Downtown LA, it got our attention. A gourmet burger spot, an LA Korean star going fast-casual, new Indian, grilled cheese and more is just the beginning of what's going on there, and most just opened this last week. Soon there will be another Mendocino Farms, Loteria Grill and Sprinkles.

While we hate the parking situation - to get reasonable parking rates, you have to go down several floors and somehow find you're way to retail entrance (make sure you get validated at one of the shops) - some of these spots are worth a stop, especially if you're already nearby. Here's a quick look (and taste) of what you'll see at Taste so far, in order of our favorite bites.

New Dumpster Diving/Cooking Reality Show Hits Airwaves in Europe 0 comments

We've all seen our fair share of primetime exposés and NY Times trend pieces about dumpster diving - chronicling the late night adventures of anti-consumerist "freegans." But now one Austrian TV show is taking the bizarre subculture next levs with a reality show entitled Waste Cooking, (which hit the airwaves in December) in which divers whip up impressive culinary creations with wasted food they find in the garbage. Check out a clip of the show complete with its own theme song above. It's in German but the visuals speak for themselves. [via NPR]

Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby of Vedge: Two Truths and a Lie 0 comments

In just over a year since opening Vedge, husband and wife partners Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby have accomplished quite a bit. They’ve proved to diners and critics that meatless cuisine can be luxurious and that their restaurant deserves a place among the best in Philadelphia, regardless of carnivorous stance. They also recently scored a deal with retail giant Williams-Sonoma to produce a line of sauces under the Vedge label.

We chatted briefly with the pair about the deal, and also dug up a few fun facts about the vegan team. Two of the following are completely true. One of them is a total fib. Which is which? Take a guess below to reveal the answer.

Get That French-Alps Feeling at Aka Bistro's Fondue Party 0 comments

Aka Bistro's al fresco fondue party
It has become a sold-out annual tradition, so we’re giving you the heads up now. Lincoln's lauded French/Japanese restaurant Aka Bistro is holding its al fresco fondue party on Sunday, January 27. The early evening extravaganza starts with mulled wine and charcuterie indoors, followed by a four-cheese fondue complete with croutons and vegetables like pickled mushrooms prepared by chef and co-owner Chris Chung. The group heads outside to the patio and, in the glow of heaters, commences to eat, drink, huddle and cuddle their way through a lovely evening. “You think you are in Chamonix - it’s crazy,” says co-owner and general manager Christian Touche. (He should know, Touche is very French). Book now while seats are available (4:30 PM gathering followed by outdoor dinner; $55 per person, includes wine pairings; 781-259-9920).

Viet Pham on Foraging, Extreme Chef and Beating Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America 0 comments

Kicking the crap out of Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America is no small feat, but neither is winning Food & Wine's Best New Chef 2011, or owning and operating your own über-buzzy Salt Lake City eatery. Chef Viet Pham has accomplished all three, the former just this Sunday but his plans for culinary domination don't stop there. A close friendship with Saison chef Josh Skenes has influenced the young toque to open a new Utah venture this summer that will focus on open-fire cooking. We caught up with the Extreme Chef runner-up recently to kibitz on all of the above. Check out our chat with him below.

Zagat: You beat Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America this Sunday by a sizable margin - what was the experience like?
It was quite a surreal experience, because it’s such an iconic cooking show and it dates back…like twenty years or so of history is there and I grew up watching Iron Chef Japan. You never tell yourself, "oh one day I’ll be on Iron Chef," and all of the sudden I got this tremendous opportunity. I used to watch Iron Chef Japan with my parents so for this competition, I was able to fly my parents out and they were in the audience watching. So it was a very surreal and a very proud moment.

Jeremy Fox Leaves His Old Soul Behind, More Chefs Pop In 0 comments

The Churchill's Bruce Kalman
Chef Jeremy Fox is on the move again. He most recently popped up with Old Soul at Square One Dining in East Hollywood, weekend night dinners coordinated with the This Is Not a Pop Up group. But according to Helena Brown, one of the  Pup Up founders, Fox had "a last-minute opportunity...which he felt the need to pursue." So more chefs will fill the gap, beginning January 17. The new series will launch with James Trees (Michael Mina Group, Fig) and continue with Adam Gertler (The Next Food Network Star), Bruce Kalman (new exec chef of The Churchill), Tyler Wells (Handsome Coffee) and CJ Jacobson (Top Chef, Mercantile). Each chef will hold a weekend residency with $50 set menus. Menus, bios and reservations can be found on the website.

Yep, Food World Celebs Are Also Obsessed With SoulCycle 0 comments

The fitness obsessed people in your office won't shut-up about SoulCycle (ahem...um..we don't talk about it that much!), and it turns out that some big names from the food world are into the positive vibes at these cycling studios. People Magazine spied Gail Simmons and Tom Colicchio in a recent class. Witness:

"'While Gail was upfront wearing a SoulCycle t-shirt, Tom was in the back wearing black shorts, an Under Armour tank and a do-rag,' an onlooker tells PEOPLE."

And when they were done, they apparently started talking to Food & Wine publisher Christina Grdovic, who also happened to be in the room. Next up, an up and coming SoulCycle filled with ingenue food bloggers looking for jobs.

A Chef and A Shotgun: The Hunt Brings Strange Game to Next 0 comments

Here's the latest from Achatz world: Blood and bones and food served on logs. The latest video released by Next shows the new menu is more than strange game meat (although that is a substantial part of it). It brings the flavors of the Midwest into the upscale restaurant with an elegant take on local, foraged and preserved ingredients. In addition to dishes such as rabbit pate, elk jerky, boar salami, antelope heart tartare, and blood sausage served on a log; more refined courses such as poached sturgeon are served on antique china. Serious Eats has a first look at the complete meal.

Season tickets for 2103, which also include the vegetarian and Bocuse d'Or menus, have been sold. The first round of individual tables went on sale on Tuesday and sold out in two hours. The remaining tickets for The Hunt will go on sale next week as well as same night tables being sold thorough their Twitter and Facebook page. Tickets can only be purchased through the Next ticketing system. Good luck, and happy hunting.

10 Bars to Hit Up For a Hot Toddy in SF 0 comments

Haven’t you heard? Today is National Hot Toddy Day, and frankly with the cold snap that just moved in, we’re about ready for a warm and potent drink. The following 10 Bay Area bars are offering their spin on the beloved winter elixir, which at its core is simply some sort of spirit, hot water and lemon.

Elixir: In honor of the faux holiday, the bartenders at this Mission bar are discounting their house Hot Toddy ($8 all day, normally $10), which is made with Trace Bourbon and their house blend of baking spices.

Blackbird: Warm your innards at this Castro/Upper Market bar slinging a Hot Toddy ($6) made with single-barrel bourbon and Earl Grey syrup.

Stage 48 Now Hosting Shows, Z Bar and Restaurant Coming Soon 1 comments

A while back, we told you about a massive new restaurant and nightlife complex Z Bar, which will be a potential game changer in Hell's Kitchen (at least for the concert-going set who made Terminal 5 one of the city's hottest venues). Well, the restaurant and bar portion is still being worked on (sources say late February or early March), the music venue quietly opened a few weeks back.

The building used to house a horse-stable in the 1950s, but we think modern audiences will prefer the live music on the first two floors. Right now shows are booked for weekends (Talyor Dane plays tomorrow - OMG) -you can see the full lineup here - but we would expect the calendar to expand once more of the space is up and running. The stage is 34-feet wide, putting it on the more intimate side of city venues, and the room features a nice horseshoe shaped mezzanine that overlooks the acts and crowd below.

Also on tap are a roooftop bar dubbed Sky Lounge that should roll out by the spring (605 W.48th St.).

Best Thing We Ate This Week: Pastrami Slider at City Tap House 0 comments

Pastrami is one of the best things that can happen to beef, and burgers are definitely another. The two come together in a tasty marriage at West Philly’s City Tap House, but this is no slapped-together pairing. The wee sandwiches are serious flavor bombs, thanks to plump beef patties that have pastrami spices mixed right into the meat.

La Mar Launches Ceviche Bar, Southern Brunch at Co-Op 0 comments

Ceviche at La Mar
Flatiron's La Mar just announced a new feature for ceviche lovers. The Peruvian eatery just announced a new interactive bar where diners can watch the seafood being prepared by a cebichero (kind of like the raw fish version of a mixologist?). A new menu for the ceviche bar features selections like the the cebiche fashion, a mix of lobster, shrimp and calamari noodles. That and a Pisco sour sounds like a plan to us (212-612-3388).

Down on the LES, chef James London is rolling out a new brunch menu at the Hotel on Rivington's Co-Op. London grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, so it's no surprise that his offerings are Southern-inspired. Expect dishes like fried chicken and waffles and shrimp and grits, along with endless Bloody Marys and Mimosas. Brunch is served on the weekends from noon to 3 PM (212-796-8040).

Sodikoff’s Restaurants Get New Websites and Possible Location 0 comments

Trendy restaurateur Brendan Sodikoff’s restaurants (Gilt Bar, Maude’s Liquor Lounge, Doughnut Vault, Au Cheval and Bavette’s Bar & Boeuf) were so cool they didn’t even have websites, others only operated on blogs while the remining had outdated-overly flashy websites. Not anymore. With help from Hogsalt, each of the restaurants is sporting a sexy new website with photos, menus, online reservation systems and Twitter feeds.

Perhaps this is in preparation for the wave of new restaurants opening under Sodikoff's name this year. It is rumored his Jewish deli concept, Dillman’s, will take over the recently closed Steve’s Deli in River North. He is also planning to transform Curio, the cocktail lounge below Gilt, into a ramen joint, as well as opening a BBQ restaurant and Neapolitan pizza place.

Hawksmoor Air Street Launches Bar Menu 0 comments

Bar snacks have come a long way in recent years. Pimping them up even further is Hawksmoor on Air Street with a new bar food menu launching on Monday.

Like the restaurant itself, the new menu offers a collection of well executed basics including classic favourites like queenie scallops, lightly battered, deep fried and served with a coarse tartar sauce as well as pickled cockles and three types of oysters.  Also on the menu is a brand new Brixham crab sandwich which we can't wait to try.

York & Albany's Pop-Up Hunting Cabin Opens 0 comments

Looking for a reason to abandon your January detox? Here's a good one.

Gordon Ramsay's Regents Park restaurant York & Albany has opened The Hunting Cabin where, for six weeks only, they will be serving winter favourites like mulled wine, spiced boozy hot chocolate with marshmallows, hot apple cider as well as savoury snacks such as game sausage rolls, black pudding scotch eggs and venison sausages. Inspired by the historic hunting grounds in the area, the cosy lodge at the edge of the park has space for just 15 people and is decked out in traditional tartans, tweeds, animal skins with antlers and taxidermy covering the walls. We say try the detox again in the spring.

Photo of the Day: New A.O.C. Teasers 0 comments

We love that Suzanne Goin has hopped on the Twitter bandwagon, if only to get updates from her tastings for the new A.O.C. menu (for when it moves) and her cookbook. This lovely light quinoa salad sounds like exactly what we want right now, and it seems like we'll be getting it soon. She also Tweets about the new bay trees that are going into the space (yay for the patio!), and some minor pre-renovation shots. Things are still on track to open in the next month or so, but until then, the original location is still open.

Sirena Opens Tonight on Beverly Boulevard 0 comments

The pretty patio looks even prettier
Remember Pane e Vino, that longstanding Italian spot with one of the most romantic twinkle light-filled patios in town? In 2011 it closed after 20 years of pasta and patio nights to make way for Sirena, a project from Michael Sutton (a partner in a lot of now-shuttered spots like Guys and Dolls, Memphis, the Lodge and Goa), Peter Garland (Porta Via) and Sandy Gendel (Pace). The new decor is more Mediterranean with its white stucco exterior and breezy blue and brick interior. The menu will match with Coastal Med-inspired seafood, pasta and pizzas.

Cuba Libre Celebrates “Heat Wave” With Empanada Special 1 comments

It’s not quite the tropics, but this week we’re enjoying much warmer than normal weather for Philadelphia. Embracing its island heritage, Cuba Libre is offering a special on empanadas that’s tied to the balmy climate. Each day during happy hour, empanadas will be available at a price set by the high temperature for that day. For example, if the morning forecast calls for a high of 54°F, a hot and crispy empanada can be yours for just 54 cents.

Regular happy hour runs 5-7 PM weekdays, but in celebration of the warmth, the Old City Cuban is extending the heat wave special through this Saturday and Sunday as well. Combined with the cold-weather deals we mentioned yesterday, there’s something to look forward to no matter which way the mercury goes (215-627-0666).

Aw, Shucks: 10 Best Raw Bars in LA 0 comments

Raw bars are so much more than just oysters on the half shell; you can get those just about everywhere these days. Raw bars are de rigueur now, with several on the way, whether it's at a hot gastropub or haute dining room. Here are the top 10 spots voted the best in the Zagat 2013 Los Angeles Restaurants to find your oysters, clams, mussels, crab legs, plump juicy shrimp and more. Do you agree? Let us know your favorites in the comments.

"His foot had stuck on the gas and he was going to go ahead and order some pizza - so he wasn't too upset about it, evidently, but it sure was a surprise to us."

Mark Your Calendars: Cochon Comes to Philly on July 28 0 comments

We may not have been selected as one of the 10 cities where pork fest Cochon555 will gather worthy competitors for an epic battle at Aspen's Food & Wine Classic come June, but that doesn't mean we'll miss out on the gluttony entirely. Foobooz points out that on July 28 the Cochon group will be hosting something in Philly called "Epic." While details are scarce, if it's anything like their other events (which feature five local chefs preparing nose-to-tail dishes from seven heritage pigs, along with plenty of booze to go with it), the name should ring true. Stay tuned for more details.

Can't wait for July and want to see what the fuss is about? If you're willing to travel, the five-year anniversary of the competition series starts out in NYC on February 10. You can buy tickets here.

Best Thing We Ate Last Night: Bone Marrow at Hog & Rocks 0 comments

While all eyes are across the street from Hogs & Rocks, where the Maverick team is inching closer to opening their third Mission venture Hi Lo BBQ, there’s plenty of exciting stuff worth paying attention to at the two-year old neighborhood gastropub known for its trifecta of ham, oysters and whiskey. New executive chef Robin Song, who came aboard in October after working with Daniel Patterson at Plum Bar and Haven, has slowly been elevating the pub grub menu while still keeping the tried-and-true bar favorites - pimento cheese, pretzels, etc.

We stopped in last night to check out some of the dishes. To start we enjoyed a self-guided exploration of the restaurant’s namesake items with a sampler plates of both, but we also dug Song’s newest dishes including an expertly executed two-tone baby heirloom beet salad garnished with tangles of fennel, dollops of brandied goat cheese and crunchy wild rice nuggets that reminded us of earthy Rice Crispies. Song is really embracing the whole snout-to-tail thing by utilizing every part of the pig, which resulted in last night’s housemade coppa di testa appetizer, slightly crunchy paper-thin slices of headcheese. But our favorite hands-down was a not-so-small plate of roasted bone marrow topped with mélange of pickled cauliflower, onions, grapes and raisins, which embodied the best of agrodolce, equal parts sweet, sour, meaty, creamy and crunchy.
