Why do staff members keep their doors open?

Have you ever noticed why staff members keep their door open? In honor of Student Affairs month, the Staff Development committee asked some student affairs professional why they had an open door policy. Read what they had to say and don't forget to wish a DSA staff member Happy Student Affairs month!
“Keeping my door open is the easiest way that I can be available to needs of staff and
students, especially for the unexpected things that come up. I try to leave my door open as
much as possible so that anyone can stick their head in to get assistance or just say ‘hello’.”
-James Fairchild, Associate Director for Housing Operations for Housing
‘’To let students know I am always available for the. I love when students stop by to share
all the exciting things going on in their life.’
-Josh Walton, Coordinator in Orientation and Transition Programs
“I want to be sure that my students feel they can come to me with anything (personal,
professional, etc.”
-Mara Jackson, Student Activities Coordinator
“I have an open door policy because I want my student to know that I am here for them. I’m
here when they need to talk and support them. It’s one of my philopsophies that I want my
students to learn and grow, as well as feel comfortable with who they are. My door is open
to help them achieve this and help them in their journey.”
-Tricia Rodriquez, Community Service Coordinator in Center for Leadership & Service
