Watches vs. Warnings

Prior to a tornado, severe thunderstorm, flash floods, or other weather hazard, the National Weather Service may issue a watch or warning to help residents prepare for the approaching weather. Both watches and warnings are broadcast over the radio and on TV.

Severe Weather Watches

Watch: Conditions are favorable for the severe weather event in or near the watch area. When a watch is announced, stay alert and be ready to take action if the situation worsens.

Severe Weather Warnings

Warning: Severe weather event is imminent or occurring in the warning area.  Take action immediately.
