Channel 4's documentary hit Educating Yorkshire is to return for a Christmas special, catching up with the staff and pupils of Thornhill Community Academy.

The special will revisit some of Educating Yorkshire's best known characters to see how they are getting on in the new school year and celebrate the highlights of the six-part series.

Details of the fast turn-around commission are still being worked out by producer TwoFour and a Channel 4 spokeswoman said it was too soon to say who would feature.

Educating Yorkshire was one of Channel 4's biggest autumn hits, with the final episode attracting 3 million viewers in overnight ratings.

The Christmas special was announced on Thursday by chief creative officer Jay Hunt at the broadcaster's annual upfront presentation of its 2014 schedule to advertisers.

Hunt also announced the return of Drugs Live which, after giving Keith Allen ecstasy and filming the results, will move on to chronicling the effects of high strength "skunk" cannabis on the human brain.

The 90-minute one-off, made by independent producer Renegade, Drugs Live: Cannabis, will follow the trial conducted at University College London by psychopharmacologists Professor Val Curran from UCL and Professor David Nutt from Imperial College.

Also returning is Channel 4 19th-century historical drama The Mill, with a second six-part series from Endemol subsidiary DSP.

Motorcycle racer and lorry mechanic Guy Martin will feature in a four-parter in which he sets out to create speed-based challenges, including slip-streaming a racing driver and attempting to reach 100mph on a pedal cycle.

Guy Martin: Speed, a working title, is being made by North One Television.
