Today a startup launched a new social sharing app... it's called Vine, and here is what it does:

---

Vine is the best way to see and share life in motion. Create short, beautiful, looping videos in a simple and fun way for your friends and family to see.

• Unlimited uploads and free
• Instantly post videos on Vine, then share to Twitter and Facebook (more coming soon!)...Expand this post »

It (still) looks Google holds the right cards, regarding a add free social experience. Of source this is because Google can display the adds on different places in stead of Google plus itself. There aren't many (if any) 'social' companies that can do the same...

How to design a magazine? Start with the most important element...

Today I'm working on a new concept for Baekdal Plus. I'm pretty happy with it's design, but the organization is not sharp enough. When people come to a Baekdal Plus report, which is usually between 15 and 30 pages long, they don't see as a report. Instead I get emails from people saying "Why should I pay for your blog?"

What blog? I don't...Expand this post »

The trouble with analytics

Let me show you something odd. For the past month, the most popular article in terms of unique visitors is this one:

"Print Your Own 3D models": http://www.baekdal.com/trends/print-3d-cheap

ROI For Brands, The No Bullshit Way
http://www.baekdal.com/insights/roi-for-brands-the-no-bullshit-way/

Many people to say that they can't calculate the return of investment. But you can. You can always calculate ROI on a macro level... and you can also look for ROI by looking for patterns

In 2013, you have to prove your worth. You have to demonstrate that you are generating real sales, and that your ...Expand this post »

As I wrote in 2013: What to Focus On, getting a grasp on ROI, or return on investment, is more important than ever for CMOs.

Facebook Graph Search Privacy Woes
Facebook Graph Search can be used for many good things, but it is designed to create a correlation where there is none.

We all love data, but one thing that troubles me about the new world of 'big data' is when people start to put together data points that are not based on the same action.

This is what is called quoting out of context. That is, when we use data/quotes to imply a something that was never there.

The problem is people who search without thinking about the correlation and causation. One day they will see a result that causes them to draw a connection between two completely separate data points. And that's when the social backlash happens.

Facebook's new search engine 'Graph Search' is heading into a new kind of privacy trouble that we previously haven't seen. The problem is not the data, but the implied relationship within it. A relati...

I'd love to see it used to turn smearing newspapers on each other. People would run "Newsweek readers support racism" and Newsweek would fire back with "Subscribers to People enjoy getting drunk". Any media that tries to run with this should (and hopefully would) get ridiculed and possibly sued should they try stunts with it.

Here is the speech I just gave on our earnings call:

Happy New Year everyone and welcome to our earnings call.  Thank you for joining us this afternoon.

We ended 2012 with a strong quarter.  Revenue was up 36% year-on-year, and 8% quarter-on-quarter.  And we hit $50 billion in revenue for the first time last year – not a bad achievement in just a decade and a half.

We’ve talked a lot about excellence ...Expand this post »

Things are simple when you understand the concept behind them... Case in point.

How a key works.  That's the best use of an animated GIF that I have ever seen. Now I'm off to my lock-picking class.

Now I need to see a similar gif to illustrate one of those lock picking devices, a jiggler. It vibrates and twists at random and eventually (within seconds) finds the rotation. See them on YouTube, quite alarming.
