Convention hall atmosphere shifts but Sanders supporters continue protests

As thunderous applause filled the convention floor Tuesday evening when Hillary Clinton became the first woman to claim a major party nomination, it appeared that Democrats had achieved party unity.  

Within minutes, though, at least 100 Bernie Sanders delegates walked out of the Wells Fargo Center and held sit-ins in the middle of three media tents. "This is what Democracy looks like," they chanted.

Women who all lost children to gun violence or in confrontations with the police took the stage Tuesday night at the Democratic convention.  

The "Mothers of the Movement" has endorsed and campaigned for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who often introduces them at campaign events as “a group of mothers who belong to a club no one ever wants to join.”

PHILADELPHIA — As delegates overwhelmingly cast their votes for Hillary Clinton's history making presidential nomination on Tuesday, thousands of protesters — many of them Bernie Sanders supporters — kept up the call to “shut down" the Democratic convention.

Gathering outside Philadelphia City Hall, protesters rallied around a melange of causes represented with signs like “Black Lives Matter,” “Decolonize the DNC,” “Bernie or Bust,” and “Stop Israeli War Crimes” bopping in the air.

In a dramatic show of unity, Bernie Sanders ended the roll call vote on Tuesday to give Hillary Clinton's history making presidential nomination a rousing finish.  

With the delegate vote count already in the bag for the former secretary of state, her main rival, Sanders, stood to ask the chair of the proceedings to suspend the rules and proclaim Clinton the Democratic nominee by acclimation.

PHILADELPHIA – Hillary Rodham Clinton overcame one of the greatest barriers in two and a-half centuries of American political history on Tuesday, when the Democratic National Convention formally selected her as the first woman presidential nominee of a major political party.  

Her shattering of the glass ceiling, which became foreordained two months ago, was something of an anticlimactic afterthought for many delegates still caught in the party’s latest bout with internal strife .

Two liberal groups are withdrawing their endorsements of Florida Senate candidate Rep. Alan Grayson after his former wife publicly accused the Democrat of domestic abuse over a period of two decades.  

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America also called on Grayson to give the money they donated to his campaign to an Orlando-based organization to help victims of domestic abuse.

PHILADELPHIA — Tim Kaine has an impressive resume to be sure, but it is not quite as unique as advertised.  

The junior senator from Virginia and Democratic vice presidential hopeful had said he was one of just 20 people to have served as a mayor and a governor as well as a senator. But it turns out that claim was somewhat incomplete.

The second night of the Democratic National Convention will highlight Hillary Clinton's "fights for her life," issues that she has worked on over her many years in public life.  

Those include advocating for children and families, social justice, woman's rights, 9/11 first-responders, health care and human trafficking.

Anne Holton, wife of Democratic vice presidential hopeful Tim Kaine, resigned Tuesday as Virginia’s education secretary.  

Holton made the decision to step down after Hillary Clinton chose Kaine to be her running mate , according to WRIC-TV in Richmond . She's held the position since January 2014.

Hundreds of Senate cafeteria workers will receive a total of more than $1 million in back pay after the Labor Department found that they were illegally denied wages they had earned, officials announced Tuesday.  

Senate food service vendor Restaurant Associates and its subcontractor, Personnel Plus, improperly classified workers in order to pay them for lower-wage positions and required them to work overtime without compensation in violation of federal and local labor laws, the agency said in a news release. The contractors also failed to pay required health and other benefits.

Freedom Partners Action Fund, a super PAC propped up by conservative activists Charles and David Koch, Tuesday plunked down $1 million for a new 30-second ad denouncing former Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh in front of Indiana voters.  

The commercial, tagged “Bailout Bayh,” assails the two-term lawmaker — who recently launched a comeback bid  for his old seat — for supporting the 2008 bailout of financial institutions and later serving on the board of some of those same beneficiaries.

Indiana Republicans on Tuesday picked Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb to replace vice presidential candidate Mike Pence on the ballot in the governor's race  against Democrat John Gregg.  

The 22-member Republican State Central Committee voted anonymously to select Holcomb over 5th District Rep. Susan W. Brooks and 4th District Rep. Todd Rokita, who had both withdrawn from their Houses races .

Bernie Delegates Network Found Alternate VP Pick — But Name Still a Secret

The Bernie Delegates Network announced at their Tuesday morning meeting that they had found a "genuine progressive" alternative to Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine who had been willing to be nominated for vice president.  

But the group would not release the name because it was "moot," said co-founder Jeff Cohen. The network was unable to obtain the necessary forms from the Democratic National Committee in time to put his or her name into nomination.
