ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – Arlington voters appear to be cheering cocktails. Tuesday night a proposition that would allow hard liquor sales in the city for the first time – was on the verge of passing.

Arlington is the largest city in the entire state to not allow liquor sales.

You can see what the law has done, just by looking at where liquor stores have located. One of the closed to the city of Arlington is actually in Fort Worth, but just a couple blocks away from city limits.

You’ll find liquor stores in Pantego, and Dalworthington Gardens too, all cities that are surrounded by Arlington.

If the proposition passes those liquor stores will be able to locate in city limits if they want.

The Tuesday vote is actually the third time in the last eight years voters have gone to the polls in Arlington to vote on alcohol. In 2005 voters approved some wine sales at stores. Two years ago, they allowed some restaurants to sell drinks without special permission.

This final push actually started, with the Texas Rangers. The club sells drinks at games now with special permits. The Rangers wanted more flexibility though on what they sell, and wanted to keep costs down. So the move for mixed beverage sales soon included the entire city.

As long as stores are setting up in industrial or retail areas now, they’ll be allowed. Although the city council could look at some more restrictions, like keeping the stores farther away from schools, hospitals or churches.
