SH 183 Managed Lanes

Project Description

TxDOT is performing a preliminary evaluation of managed lane improvements to all or part of State Highway (SH) 183 from SH 121 to IH 35E, and other roadways.

This project will be developed under a Comprehensive Development Agreement (CDA), which provides innovative methods for development and finance. The SH 183 Managed Lanes Project is crucial to responding to traffic congestion throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

The Study Corridor

The project includes all or part of SH 183 from SH 121 to IH 35E. Portions of Loop 12 and SH 114 may also be included and are subject to legislative approval.

Purpose and Need

The SH 183 corridor in the western portion of Dallas County and the eastern portion of Tarrant County is one of the most highly congested corridors in the region. It has retained its basic configuration since the late 1970s.

Although adjacent development has increased, the roadway's capacity has remained largely unchanged. The highways that connect to the SH 183 corridor are also congested and are expected to increase in congestion if no improvements are made.

Current Developments

  • A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) was issued on Feb. 20, 2013.
  • On Feb. 14, 2013, the expanded scope SB 1420 Committee met to determine a delivery model. In accordance with their determinations, TxDOT is moving forward with a toll concession delivery method.
  • On Jan. 31, 2013, the Texas Transportation Commission authorized the issuance of an RFQ for the development of the SH 183 Managed Lanes Project through a CDA.
