with a Confederate soldiers’ home to modest structures built by African Americans in mountain communities in western Virginia
to the high-style mansions of Virginia’s elite, the commonwealth’s post-Civil War and early 20th-century history is represented in sites recently listed in the VLR

Recent News and Announcements
12 Sites Added to the Virginia Landmarks Register: New listings over sites in the counties of Franklin, Highland, Loudoun, Nelson, Powhatan, including four sites in Bath County, and the cities of Richmond and Roanoke. Read the press release (or view the slideshow above).

V-CRIS has a new public access feature: DHR is pleased to announce that our recently-launched state-of-the-art GIS-based database, known as V-CRIS, allows limited access to the public. While V-CRIS is a fee-based, licensed service, it does feature a public component that allows visitors to search the database for basic information on individual architectural resources or historic districts. It can be accessed here. Meanwhile, detailed information about architectural and archaeological resources can be found using the fee-based system, registration available here.

DHR's Draft Work Plan Oct. 2013Sept. 2014: Now available for review: DHR is soliciting comments from the public on our proposed annual work plan. This 26-page document spells out the agency's vision, its goals, and strategies to achieve various goals within DHR's program areas. DHR will be accepting comments on the plan through October 15. Register Now for Cemetery Workshop in Roanoke: DHR staff will be offering a Cemetery Workshop Saturday, Oct. 19 and Sunday Oct. 20. The workshop, in partnership with Preservation Virginia, will cover topics ranging from funerary symbolism to training in the appropriate care and maintenance of grave yards, as well as cemetery research techniques, mortuary archaeology, and Virginia burial law. Training sessions on the second day of the workshop will be conducted in Roanoke's City Cemetery. Early registration is encouraged as workshop space is limited. The fee for both days of the workshop is $60 or $40 for Saturday only. Participants must attend Saturday’s sessions in order to participate in Sunday’s workshop at the cemetery. Nine Historic Sites Added to the Virginia Landmarks Register in June: Virginia history from the Colonial to the post-World War II eras is represented in nine sites the Virginia Department of Historic Resources approved for listing in the Virginia Landmarks Register, the state’s official list of important historic places. 16 New Historical Highway Markers Approved: Among the 16 new historical highway markers approved in June by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources are seven signs covering Civil War history, six highlighting African American history, and a sign recounting how the Declaration of Independence was saved during the War of 1812 before the British burned Washington DC.
