Virginia Coastal Needs Assessment and Strategy

Every five years the Virginia CZM Program produces a "Coastal Needs Assessment and Strategy" report as required under Section 309 of the Coastal Zone Management Act. This report outlines the high priority resource and issue areas on which the Virginia CZM Program will focus its attention, efforts and match-free funding provided under Section 309 of the CZMA.

Virginia CZM Program Projects Catalogue - Published 1998

The Virginia CZM Program Projects Catalogue (published prior to the availability of on-line project descriptions) includes summary information on grant projects completed for the program between 1986 to 1996 - it outlines documents and reports produced, project results and contact information. 2001 State of Virginia's Coast Report

2001 Virginia State of the Coast Report (3,190 kb, pdf) (NOTE: Available on-line only. Please call (804) 698-4051 if you need assistance.)
The State of the Coast report was prepared by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science's Center for Coastal Resources Management with input from all of the Virginia CZM Program member agencies and localities to clarify coastal resource trends and management needs. It addresses five core areas of coastal management including: wildlife and fisheries, habitat, planning and development, water quality and public access and information.

  • Summary of Recent Coastal Zone Management Act Program Evaluations — NOAA's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management has released a first-of-its-kind report discussing some fo the most prominent coastal management issues tackled by state Coastal Zone Management programs and National Estuarine Research Reserver programs in recent years.

  • NOAA Library — The library contains documents and work products produced over the past 30 years of coastal zone management. The library contains a comprehensive collection of information on hydrographic surveying, oceanography, meteorology, hydrology, living marine resources and meteorological satellite applications.

  • CAMMP — The Coastal and Marine Management Program system is used by CZM and NERR programs to create their grant applications. Parts one and two of the 2009 CAMMP User's Manual, as well as the 2009 CAMMP Tips document, are available as reference materials for these documents.

    Promotes the Voluntary Protection, Enhancement, Restoration and Creation of wetlands - prepared in partnership with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), through a grant award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Wetlands Program Development Grants initiative. Guides viewers through the background information necessary to understand wetland functions and values. It provides useful information to Virginia's landowners, both private and public, on the status of wetlands, various options for the use and management of their wetlands, current regulatory protection as well as voluntary efforts, and technical and financial resources for protection, enhancement, restoration and creation projects. Included within the ToolKit are basics regarding wetland identification, types and classification as well as a section discussing types of wetland monitoring. Available on-line and in hardcopy.

Protecting Migratory Bird Habitat on the Southern Tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore: Efforts of Virginia CZM and its Partners (PDF - Fact Sheet)

Neotropical Migratory Songbird Coastal Corridor Study (pdf) - this study, funded in part by the Virginia CZM Program, documented the importance of a mid-Atlantic neotropical migratory bird flyway with major "stopover" or rest stops (New Jersey through Virginia).  The report documented significantly higher concentrations of birds on the Southern Tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore and how critical it is to protect the habitat on which migrants depend during their long journeys.  This report supported the development of the Northampton County Special Area Management Plan.
