"This Commonwealth of Opportunity" Statewide Tour.

In August, Governor Bob McDonnell embarked on his "This Commonwealth of Opportunity" tour of Virginia. The tour, which began in Salem and concluded in Leesburg, highlighted Virginia’s successes over the past three and a half years including a falling unemployement rate, rebounding shellfish industry, transportation breakthroughs, open space conservation achievements, increased agricultural exports, and educational innovations to benefit Virginia’s students, teachers and parents.

Governor Bob McDonnell Appoints Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Marla Graff Decker to the Court of Appeals of Virginia

RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that he is appointing Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Marla Graff Decker to the Court of Appeals of Virginia. Secretary Decker will fill the seat left vacant by the recent retirement of Judge Larry Elder. Judge Elder's retirement was announced on September 4th. Decker will join the Court in November. An announcement regarding the Governor's selection of a new Secretary of Public Safety will be made in the days ahead.

Governor Bob McDonnell Announces Virginia Posts Record Number of Summer Good Air Quality Days

RICHMOND - Air quality in Virginia continues to show significant improvement, as Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that 2013 has been the best year on record for clean air in the Commonwealth.

"Clean air is of vital importance to all Virginians," Governor McDonnell said. "The Commonwealth's long-term efforts to protect people's health and the environment are paying off, and we expect air quality improvements to continue in the future."

Governor McDonnell Announces Overseas Visitors Spend Record Amount in Virginia in 2012: Spending Grows 9% to $425 Million

RICHMOND - Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that overseas visitor spending in the Commonwealth for 2012 hit a record of $425 million, a nine percent increase over 2011. The state also welcomed increased visitation and spending by Canadian visitors in 2012, with overnight visitation up three percent and spending up more than four percent, totaling nearly $155 million. The U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of Travel and Tourism Industries, the Survey of International Air Travelers, and Statistics Canada provide the annual economic data. This data follows the Governor's announcement in early September that revenue from domestic visitors to Virginia hit a record $21.2 billion in 2012, a four percent increase over 2011, according to the U.S. Travel Association.
