Mission

Established December 1, 1967, the Office for Intellectual Freedom is charged with implementing ALA policies concerning the concept of intellectual freedom as embodied in the Library Bill of Rights, the Association’s basic policy on free access to libraries and library materials.

Responsibilities

The goal of the office is to educate librarians and the general public about the nature and importance of intellectual freedom in libraries and to support librarians, teachers, and administrators undergoing a material or service challenge.

In Memoriam

Judith Krug, director of the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom since its founding in 1967, passed away on April 11, 2009. Her achievements in the fight against censorship were unparalleled.  For more on her life and accomplishments, visit "Press Releases about Judith Krug".
