Using login verification

Login verification is a feature that helps you keep your account more secure. Instead of relying on just a password, login verification introduces a second check to make sure that you and only you can access your Twitter account. Only those who have access to both your password and your phone will be able to log in to your account.

Before you can enable login verification, you must:

To set up login verification:

  1. Go to your account settings on twitter.com and check the “Require a verification code when I sign in” box.
  2. When prompted, click Okay, send me a message.
  3. If you receive our verification message, click Yes (Note: you’ll have to enter your password).

Now, when you log in to your account on twitter.com, a six digit code will be sent via SMS to your phone. Enter the code when prompted and you're in!

Note: If you are currently logged in to Twitter on the web or on your mobile device (including any applications), you will not be logged out of any existing sessions once login verification is enabled.

Temporary passwords

After you enable login verification on your account, you’ll need to use a temporary password to log in to Twitter on other devices and applications that require you to enter your Twitter password.

To use a temporary password:

  1. Go to the Applications tab of your account settings on twitter.com.
  2. Click the Generate button.
  3. Enter your current account password and hit Generate again.
  4. When prompted to log in to your other device or application, enter your username and use the temporary password that you were provided.
  5. You’re in! The device or application will show up in your list of applications in your settings page.
Note: Temporary passwords will expire after one hour.

To disable login verification:

  1. Go to your account settings and uncheck the box to use login verification.
  2. Save changes (note: you’ll have to enter your password).

Troubleshooting

I didn't receive the code.

It says my phone is associated with a different account.

  • Text STOP to your Twitter code to free up your number from the other account. Then try adding your phone again.
