SMITH NAMED CHAIRMAN OF INTEGRATIVE PHYSIOLOGY AT UNT HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER

MichaelSmith.jpg Michael Smith, PhD, was recently named chairman of the Department of Integrative Physiology at UNT Health Science Center.

Dr. Smith, professor of integrative physiology, has served as acting chairman of the department for two years. He has been at the health science center for more than 10 years.

A strong proponent of collaborative research, Dr. Smith focuses his research efforts on sudden cardiac death, exercise training effects and sleep apnea. His newest research directives focus on the physiology of pain and its relation to disease, which includes his work on a collaborative grant with the Osteopathic Research Center involving the use of osteopathic manipulative medicine to help manage pain.

Dr. Smith earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Texas Lutheran College, a master of science degree in physiology from the University of Southern Illinois and a doctorate in biology from the University of North Texas in Denton.
