If you think all Texans pronounce "Howdy, y'all" the same, think again. Patricia Cukor-Avila, associate professor of linguistics, and a group of student researchers surveyed nearly 400 people across the state in different cities to explore Texans' perceptions of their own accents. Their findings show that Texans recognize regional differences, describing Texas English from "normal Texan" to "country" to "Spanish-influenced" speech. The researchers plan to present these results, including new data about where "drawl" and "twang" are perceived at the annual conference of the American Dialect Society in January.
