Mean Green Spirit and Traditions The spirit of the Mean Green is prevalent throughout the University of North Texas but never more so than during Mean Green sports events. Participate and enjoy these Mean Green game-day rituals. Eagle Claw The eagle hand sign is our universal sign of pride and unity. Curl the thumb and index and middle fingers forward. The ring and pinkie fingers stay closed against the palm. North Texas Fight Song Let's give a cheer for U of NT! Cheer for the green and white. Glory to the Green - Alma Mater The Green Brigade plays "Glory to the Green" after each game. Friday Pride Day Friday Pride Day is one of the most recent campus traditions which continues to spread throughout the North Texas community. With the help of a few spirited staff members a campaign to turn the campus green was unveiled. This campaign encourages faculty, staff, students, and other in support of North Texas to sport their Mean Green Gear every Friday. Victory Cannon - "Boomer" The tradition of firing the cannon began in 1970. Boomer is a scale replica of a Civil War cannon maintained and operated by the Talons, and is fired at special campus events and at football games following Mean Green touchdowns and the end of each quarter. Spirit Bell The Spirit Bell was brought to Denton from Michigan in 1891. Originally used to signal class changes and evening curfew, the 2,000-pound bell served as a sound of victory for many years until a crack was found within the bell. The bell's successor can be heard at any home game ringing with pride. Model A - "Green Machine" The Green Machine is a green 1929 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan built in 1931. It was donated to UNT by alumnus Rex Cauble in the early 1970s and is maintained and operated by the Talons. The Model A is driven by the Talons Cannon Crew at home football games, parades and other special occasions to promote Mean Green spirit. Lighting the Tower After a victory by a UNT athletic team, special green floodlights bathe the Administration Building clock tower to signal the victory to the campus and community. Football Traditions Mean Green March The Mean Green March is a parade including the Green Brigade Marching Band, North Texas Dancers, the North Texas Cheerleaders, and your Mean Green football team. The March starts at Traditions Hall and proceeds through Mean Green Village, culminating at the Apogee Stadium. The Mean Green March takes place two hours before kickoff as the team makes its final pregame preparations. Pregame Every time the Mean Green take the field: Announcer & Crowd - "Heeeeeeeere come the Mean Green!" Kickoff Cheer Crowd stands with Eagle Claws extended and yells - "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" until the ball is struck, at which point the crowd yells "Mean Green!" First Down Announcer - "That's good for another Mean Green..." Crowd response - "FIRST DOWN!" Touchdown Green Brigade plays "Fanfare" after each Mean Green touchdown and the "Fight Song" after the extra point attempt. Field Goal Green Brigade plays the "Fight Song" after every Mean Green field goal. Green Brigade Postgame concert Mean Green fans are encouraged to remain in the stands as the Green Brigade Marching Band performs their traditional post game concert. |
