UNT landed a second JUCO big man during the late signing period today when Colin Voss committed to play for the Mean Green.

Voss, a 6-7 forward, started his career at Central Michigan, spent two years at the school and then transferred to Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa. He averaged 11.6 points and 7.7 rebounds a game last season and was a second-team NJCAA All-American.

Voss, a 6-7 forward, started his career at Central Michigan, spent two years at the school and then transferred to Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa. He averaged 11.6 points and 7.7 rebounds a game last season and was a second-team NJCAA All-American.

Voss chose UNT over offers from Murray State, Lamar, South Dakota and Detroit Mercy.

“The people and the coaches were part of it,” Voss said of the reasons he decided to sign with UNT. “I liked Denton and the league. Conference USA is intriguing. I played in the MAC and C-USA is a step up. It’s a challenge that will bring out the best in me.”

Voss averaged 1.1 points and 1.3 rebounds for Central Michigan in the 2010-11 season, but broke his wrist and spent his second season at the school as a redshirt. The coaching staff at at Central Michigan was fired before Voss’ sophomore year, prompting him to transfer to junior college.

Voss is originally from Grand Rapids, Mich., and was a standout all-around athlete in high school. He was a second-team all-state selection in Michigan in basketball as a junior. He was also a Division I prospect as a tight end and had offers from several schools.

Voss said that he can score in the post and also has a mid-range game. At 240 pounds, he is a little different from UNT’s other post players who are returning and scheduled to arrive next season.

“I feel like I can really help the team out,” Voss said. “My game is different from the guys they have now. I feel like I can help them win.”

Voss was one of several prospects who visited UNT over the weekend. UNT also hosted Armani Flannigan of Central Wyoming JC, who has signed his letter of intent with the Mean Green, and Vertrail Vaughns, a guard from Central Michigan who is transferring and will use his final year of eligibility at another school.
