DENTON—A roaring ovation followed Wednesday night’s world premiere of Jake Heggie’s Ahab Symphony. Commissioned by the University of North Texas, as part of an artist-in-residence program, the new piece, for tenor solo, chorus and orchestra, was introduced at the university’s Murchison Performing Arts Center.

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 24, 2013 – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) is joining the National Science Foundation (NSF), Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI), and the University of North Texas as a co-sponsor in the third International Student Competition on Cold-Formed Steel Design. The competition is open to all full-time students at either the undergraduate or graduate levels who are interested in cold-formed steel design, creative in problem solving, and eager to learn new technologies.

It started at a rehearsal for Jake Heggie’s opera Moby-Dick, which the Dallas Opera premiered three years ago.
North Texas head coach Tony Benford and assistant David Anwar spent a lot of time talking with and visiting Armani Flannigan up in Riverton, Wyo.
That dedication paid off when UNT signed the 6-foot-8, 205-pound forward to a national letter of intent this week.

UNT came through in the final of the Sun Belt Conference tennis tournament on Sunday, which should surprise exactly no one. The Mean Green won the tournament last year and knocked off Georgia State this year 4-2.
UNT had a tougher match in the semifinals when Barbora Vykydalova won the decisive match in a 4-3 win over South Alabama.
DENTON — Blake Macek of Sulphur Springs was recently awarded a full four-year scholarship as punter for the University of North Texas.
Macek made the football team as a 5-9, 180-pound walk-on and recently continued to impress coaches during the spring game with a 49-yard punt.
UNT head coach Dan McCarney was pleased with his punting and said, "Blake Macek had one of the special-teams highlights of the day with a 49-yard punt that rolled to a stop inches from the goalline. On the next play, Jones sacked Thompson for a safety."
The University of North Texas’ One O’clock Lab Band presents “Grammy Jazz,” selections from nominated works, as part of a jazz concert Thursday night at the Dallas City Performance Hall.
Steve Wiest directs UNT’s premiere jazz ensemble, which has been nominated for six Grammys over the years.
The University of North Texas’ upcoming faculty dance concert, “Celebrating the Power of Dance,” will be the focal point of four days of events bringing together students, faculty and alumni.
When he was 14, organist Stewart W. Foster knew he needed a teacher to take him to the next level, so he began taking lessons with Jack W. Jones.
Now, more than 30 years later, Foster will take over for Jones, who’s retiring after 24 years as organist/music director at the Royal Poinciana Chapel. Jones’ last Sunday will be June 2.
