DENTON—A roaring ovation followed Wednesday night’s world premiere of Jake Heggie’s Ahab Symphony. Commissioned by the University of North Texas, as part of an artist-in-residence program, the new piece, for tenor solo, chorus and orchestra, was introduced at the university’s Murchison Performing Arts Center.

Men's basketball: Forward commits to UNT

Colin Voss spent a year refining his skills at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa.

That was enough time to make the idea of moving to Denton and playing for North Texas sound awfully appealing.

UNT was in desperate need of frontcourt players with college experience heading into the 2013-14 season after Tony Mitchell declared for the NBA draft this spring.

Early voting to start Monday in school board race

Royse City voters will have one choice when they go to the polls, beginning Monday with the opening day of early voting. That lone choice involves deciding who will serve the next three years as the Place 6 trustee on the Royse City Independent School District’s Board of Trustees. Three candidates are seeking the position. The candidates, listed in the order they appear on the ballot, are Dr. Brian Zator, Scott Muckensturm and Christina Carrion.

Engineering Students Take on New Challenge in International Cold-Formed Steel Design Competition

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 24, 2013 – The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) is joining the National Science Foundation (NSF), Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI), and the University of North Texas as a co-sponsor in the third International Student Competition on Cold-Formed Steel Design. The competition is open to all full-time students at either the undergraduate or graduate levels who are interested in cold-formed steel design, creative in problem solving, and eager to learn new technologies.

UNT to host NCAA selection party for tennis team

The UNT tennis team will host a NCAA selection show party for its players, coaches and supporters next Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the club level of Apogee Stadium.

UNT has hosted similar events each time the Mean Green has made the NCAA tournament the last several years.

The NCAA actually puts on a show that is broadcast on one of ESPN’s channels that is pretty similar to the NCAA selection show in men’s basketball.

UNT notebook: Flannigan respects coaches’ dedication

North Texas head coach Tony Benford and assistant David Anwar spent a lot of time talking with and visiting Armani Flannigan up in Riverton, Wyo.

That dedication paid off when UNT signed the 6-foot-8, 205-pound forward to a national letter of intent this week.

Flannigan averaged 14.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game last season, when he earned second-team All-Region IX honors.

Thoughts on UNT tennis heading to NCAAs again, other Monday notes

UNT came through in the final of the Sun Belt Conference tennis tournament on Sunday, which should surprise exactly no one. The Mean Green won the tournament last year and knocked off Georgia State this year 4-2.

UNT had a tougher match in the semifinals when Barbora Vykydalova won the decisive match in a 4-3 win over South Alabama.

Macek gets UNT scholarship

DENTON — Blake Macek of Sulphur Springs was recently awarded a full four-year scholarship as punter for the University of North Texas.   

Macek made the football team as a 5-9, 180-pound walk-on and recently continued to impress coaches during the spring game with a 49-yard punt.

UNT head coach Dan McCarney was pleased with his punting and said, "Blake Macek had one of the special-teams highlights of the day with a 49-yard punt that rolled to a stop inches from the goalline. On the next play, Jones sacked Thompson for a safety."

Steve Wiest directs UNT’s premiere jazz ensemble, which has been nominated for six Grammys over the years.

Former student of chapel music director to succeed him

When he was 14, organist Stewart W. Foster knew he needed a teacher to take him to the next level, so he began taking lessons with Jack W. Jones.

Now, more than 30 years later, Foster will take over for Jones, who’s retiring after 24 years as organist/music director at the Royal Poinciana Chapel. Jones’ last Sunday will be June 2.
