Top awards, special speakers will highlight Convocation & White Coat Ceremony Sept. 14
Everyone is invited to attend our annual Convocation and White Coat Ceremony Friday, Sept. 14, at 2 pm at Will Rogers Memorial Auditorium. Dr. Ron Anderson, president and CEO of Parkland Health and Hospital System, will present the keynote address, and School of Public Health student Jackline Opollo will give remarks on behalf of the new students. The Health Science Center’s most prestigious awards will also be presented. University of North Texas Chancellor Emeritus/UNT System Chancellor Emeritus Alfred F. Hurley will receive the Founders’ Medal, and Fort Worth’s First Lady Rosie Moncrief will receive The Mary E. Luibel Distinguished Service Award. All of our incoming students will be “cloaked” in the white coats that symbolize their chosen careers in health and science, and they will take a professional oath acknowledging their responsibilities and willingness to assume the obligations of their new professions. A reception will follow in the Atrium of the Education and Administration Building.

Inauguration: Pomp and Circumstance and parties, too
Make plans now to help celebrate “A World of Possibilities.” Several events are planned to mark the inauguration of the Health Science Center’s fifth president, Dr. Scott Ransom. The inauguration ceremony is Friday, Oct. 19, at 2 pm at the Fort Worth Convention Center Ballroom… classes and clinics will be closed so faculty, staff and students can attend. Transportation for the event will be provided between the Health Science Center campus and the Convention Center. But that’s not all…

Mark your calendar: Alzheimer’s expert will lead program on advances in research and treatment Oct. 16
As part of the inaugural activites, the Health Science Center’s 2007 Distinguished Speaker Series will continue on Tuesday, Oct. 16, with Dr. Steven DeKosky, professor and chair in the Department of Neurology and director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. DeKosky will present “Alzheimer’s Disease: Advances in Basic and Clinical Research and Implications for Treatment.” He will also participate in a panel discussion with other Alzheimer’s experts. The program starts at 5:15 pm in Luibel Hall, with a reception following in the Atrium. The free program offers CME credits, and is open to anyone. Seating is limited, so to get your name on the list call the PACE office at ext. 2539.

Foundation installs new board members, officers
The UNT Health Science Center Foundation Board of Directors introduced five new members and named new officers for Fiscal Year 2008 at its quarterly meeting on campus Aug. 15. The Foundation, established in 1978 by the founders of Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, acquires and manages private funds to be used solely for the benefit of the school. Community and business leaders, alumni, and distinguished medical and scientific professionals serve, without compensation, on the Foundation’s Board of Directors as advocates, advisors and strategists. They work with the Health Science Center president, his leadership team and the Division of Community Engagement/Office of Institutional Advancement to help make friends, raise community awareness and conduct fundraising campaigns.

EBAC announces election results
Congratulations to the new and returning members of the Employee Benefits and Action Committee. Serving new two-year terms are: Randy Thomas, Central Receiving, chair; Carolyne Rodgers, Custodial Services; Misty Smethers, Student Development; Shea Patterson-Young, President's Office; Pam Struve, Molecular Biology & Immunology, vice-chair; Carol Knisley, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine; Vanessa Lopez, TCOM Admissions; and Sallie Spotanski, Facilities Management. Returning members are: Jim Banks, ITS; Susan Bulgin, Institutional Advancement, treasurer; Meagan Cross, Financial Aid, recording secretary; Lauren LaFleur, Marketing & Communications; Lori Fielding, Financial Aid, corresponding secretary; Rob Spurgeon, Biomedical Communications; and Susie Quintana, Founders’ Activity Center. Remember: visitors are always welcome at all EBAC meetings, which are at 9 am on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, usually in EAD-810.

The greatest gift: First-year TCOM students honor Willed Body Program donors and families
“You are allowed to do what very few people in the world get to do – to dissect a human body. This is a privilege.” Dr. Robert Wordinger’s words summed up the purpose for TCOM’s Year One Respect Ceremony – a memorial initiated by Dr. Wordinger, chairman of Cell Biology
and Genetics, to honor those who have donated their bodies to TCOM’s Willed Body Program. The Class of 2011 sat quietly, listening to the words of those whose loved ones had given the gift of their bodies to medical education – a son, a daughter and a wife who each knew how important this donation was to their mother, father and husband. Quiet tears – both their own and the students’ – accompanied their remembrances.

Explore our Health Science Center’s proud roots by taking a literal “walk down Memory Lane” on the eighth floor of the Education and Administration Building. The first part of a hallway display of photos, documents and mementos is up and ready for viewing. Thanks to those who submitted items. If you have an artifact from the 1980s or 1990s that you would like considered for permanent inclusion on this hallway art piece, please contact Shea Patterson-Young at ext. 0301.
