UNTHSC Foundation golf tournament is a success
Despite a cloudy sky and a brisk wind, 100 golfers took to the links at Ridglea Country Club April 9 for the 2nd annual President’s Invitational Tournament, a community event held by the UNT Health Science Center Foundation. The Foundation – a private, not-for-profit organization created in 1978 by TCOM’s founders – is now led by a board of directors comprising community and business leaders, alumni and donors. The board will use the golf tournament’s revenue to conduct other events throughout the year that raise money and awareness for the Health Science Center’s clinical, research, educational and student scholarship programs. Most recently, Foundation board members, working in concert with the Office of Institutional Advancement, have raised more than $3 million to help finish out the Center for BioHealth.

Survey says…
Lewis Library looks to improve services
Did you know it’s National Library Week? What better time to get to know the Lewis Library and play a role in its future. They need your input! But not your take on the values of the Dewey Decimal System…They want to know what you think about their services. The library service quality survey that all employees and students have been invited to complete will help steer future improvements. Nearly 300 people have already taken the survey and many have left comments. Check out what they’re saying at the Lewis Library Web site. The survey is open until May 10. It’s anonymous, but you can leave your e-mail address for a chance to win an iPod. Take the Lib QUAL+ survey.

Physician Assistant Studies hosts accreditation site visit
As part of the Physician Assistant Studies Program’s accreditation process, members of the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) will be on campus for a site visit April 19 and 20. While here, the ARC-PA visitors will review every aspect of the program’s operation. They’ll make sure the program meets their set of national standards by talking with students and faculty, touring the facilities and reviewing documents such as course material and policies. Hank Lemke, MMS, PA-C, program director, says the site visit is a great opportunity to highlight the program’s strengths. He says our faculty’s dedication to the students and the high quality of our students will stand out during the visit.

Carter Blood Care gives top donor award to Health Science Center
The generous participation of employees and students in our campus blood drives during 2006 has earned the Health Science Center the “Highest Number of Donors, Colleges and Universities” award for the second year in a row. Presented April 12, the award certificate states in part, “… we celebrate and honor your commitment to saving lives and thank you for bringing life and hope to others.” The Employee Benefits and Action Committee sponsored the 2006 blood drives. Before that, the Graduate Student Association led successful drives for many years. According to the blood center, maintaining stable and ample community blood reserves requires more than 1,000 people to register to give blood every day. And, as of April 18, stores of blood types O- and B- are at a critical low.

May is National Arthritis Awareness Month… and a good reason to learn more about this painful and expensive disease at a free event on campus
Did you know that 46 million Americans are currently living with arthritis, the nation's leading cause of disability? And… an additional 8 million new cases of arthritis will be diagnosed in the next decade? And… according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the annual cost of arthritis to the U.S. economy is more than $128 billion? All employees, students, friends and families are invited to the Arthritis Expo, sponsored by the Health Science Center and the Arthritis Foundation, Saturday, May 12, from 10 am to 3 pm, in the Atrium of the Education and Administration Building. The Expo will feature a presentation by Rahul Patel, MD, a UNT Health rheumatologist, booths relating to arthritis care, a healthy cooking demonstration and a panel discussion by various members of the arthritis healthcare team, including an orthopedist who will speak on surgery for arthritis patients.
