Ms. Romel Celenese Smith was born and raised in San Francisco, California. Moved to Texas by way of family business and Texas’ mantra, “everything is ‘BIG’ in Texas,” she has big dreams of her own. Romel began her chapter with the UNT system in spring 2008, completing a bachelor’s degree in May 2011. In December 2012, she completed her master’s coursework in Information Science. In her current role in the UNTD Office of Student Life, she is responsible for assisting and providing accommodations to students with registered disabilities.

Romel has a passion for helping people and has worked as a volunteer with the Texas Department of Parole Division, where she shares her own personal stories of struggle and survival to help others believe that they, too, have hopes and dreams. She has volunteered as a career coach and freelance writer with local community newspaper companies such as Dallas Entertainment Journal (no longer in publication), Dallas Post Tribune and Elite Newspaper, which has also helped her understand the needs of the community. Additionally, she volunteers at the local library, reading to students in the after-school care program. Romel owns and operates a non-profit organization, H.O.R.S.E. (Helping Others Reach Self-Edification), in memory of her late mother. Romel puts her trust in God first so that she can contribute to her community as best she can.
