Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference and The Dallas Morning News are launching The Best American Newspaper Narrative Writing Contest this year. The contest will award prizes to three long-form narrative nonfiction pieces previously published in daily U.S. newspapers or on the newspapers’ websites.

James Leavelle, the Dallas Police Department detective who was escorting alleged presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald out of the police headquarters when Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby, will be one of the two speakers at “50 Years Since the Assassination of John F. Kennedy,” the 2013 Texas History Symposium presented by the UNT Department of History.

The Contemporary Arab and Muslim Cultural Studies Institute of UNT will host its first annual Arab Film Festival. This is the first and only Arab film festival in Texas and includes films from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and other Arab nations.

UNT will present a lecture by Jorge Huerta, Chancellor’s Associates Professor, Emeritus at the University of California at San Diego. She will discuss and demonstrate the important role that Teatro Chicana/o, or the Chicano theater movement, has played in the struggles for social justice since 1965.
