Emerald Eagle Honors
On Monday, April 15, 2013, the UNT Foundation will host the inaugural Emerald Eagle Honors: Recognizing a Lifetime of Contributions to the American Landscape. This first-of-its kind evening of live entertainment will take place at Dallas’ Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, with seating limited to approximately 1,800 ticket holders.
This Kennedy Center Honors-type stage production (which replaces the Emerald Eagle Ball) will allow the UNT Foundation to annually celebrate former UNT students who have made a profound impact on our culture and society. The honorees for the inaugural year include:
- Former Pittsburgh Steeler and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame “Mean” Joe Greene (’69);
- Rock and Roll icon, the late Roy Orbison (’55, represented by his family); and
- Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm. (’74, ’84)
The evening’s host will be actor and Academy Award nominee Peter Weller (’69) and Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars Champion Melissa Rycroft Strickland (’05).
These trailblazers will be celebrated from the Meyerson stage via career video retrospectives, remarks by speakers significant to their careers, and musical tributes by special guests and the UNT Department of Music. During the show, the honorees will watch from private boxes, surrounded by family and friends.
The show will also spotlight the wonderful stories of the evening’s beneficiary, UNT’s award-winning Emerald Eagle Scholars program. The Emerald Eagle Scholars helps high-achieving but financially challenged students pursue their college dreams. The program provides students with financial and academic support and campus connections to help them succeed in college and earn their degrees. It has allowed more than 2,400 students—most of whom are first-generation college students—to attend UNT.
The approximately 120 Emerald Eagle seniors will be recognized during the proceedings and will be seated behind the stage in the Meyerson’s choral terrace.
Tickets and sponsorships are being sold through an event committee comprised of UNT alumni and civic leaders dedicated to the cause of the Emerald Eagle Scholars program. All proceeds go to this worthy cause.
Attire for the evening is cocktail and ticket holders will be served cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres prior to the show’s approximate 7:45 pm curtain.
