Biography

Dr. Jack D. Becker is past Director of the Information Systems Research Center (1990-98) at the University of North Texas and Associate Professor of Business Computer Information Systems. He served as Chair of the Department of BCIS (now ITDS) at the University of North Texas from 1986 to 1992. He is Chairperson for PR and Communications for the Dallas Chapter of Society for Information Management (SIM; 2001-present), he was its Vice Chairperson (1999-2000) and has been an officer and board member of that organization since 1995. He served as a member of the ICIS Executive Committee from 1991 to 1994. Becker was co-program chairperson and co-editor of the proceedings for the 1992 ICIS meeting in Dallas, TX. He served as co-general chairperson of the Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) in Dallas in 2002, and served as the Chairperson of the AMCIS Executive Committee from 2002 to 2003. He was elected the first Vice President for Development of the Association of Information Systems (AIS) for 1995-97. Becker has been actively involved in university organizations, serving three years as Chairperson of the University Computing Council (now Information Systems Resource Council) and serving two years as co-chair of the UNT State Employee Contributions Committee (SECC). Dr. Becker's research and teaching interest areas include virtual teaming, logistics and eCommerce, database design, group decision support systems, computer assisted systems analysis and design, and development, and the assessment and development of communication skills for IS professionals. He has published in numerous journals, including Management Information Systems Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. He is co-author of The International Directory of IS/IT Research Centers, and served as the chairperson for the International IS/IT Research Center Directors Association from 1995-2002 with over 200 associates. He has practiced in the information systems area with numerous public and private organizations including the Lomas Financial Systems, the Missouri Botanical Garden, Centerre Bank Corp., Vitek Systems (a subsidiary of McDonnell-Douglas Corporation), Internal Revenue Service, and the U.S. Customs Service. Dr. Becker received his Ph.D. in business administration and quantitative business analysis, an MBA degree and an AB in mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He is married to Tish and and has four children, Jason, Gwen, Erin, and Caitlin. His hobbies include golf, fishing and exploring great restaurants!
