If you are in the building with the shooter:
GET OUT. Try to get out of the building as quickly as possible. Find a safe place and then call 911. Provide the police with the location and description of the shooter. If you’re in a different building than the shooter, stay in your building until authorities tell you it’s safe to leave.
· Check in. Check in if possible with a supervisor or colleague by phone or email to let him or her know that you’re safe.
· Keep informed. Stay up to date on the situation through Eagle Alert messages and follow @UNTEagleAlert on Twitter.
HIDE OUT. If you can’t get out, hide out.
· Lock out. Lock or barricade doors if possible, and then remain away from the door and out of sight.
· Lights out. Turn out the lights in the room. Silence your cell phone and remain quiet.
TAKE OUT. As a last resort, take out the shooter if he or she enters the room. If you are in a situation with an active shooter, experts advise that you protect yourself however you can. Of course, this is a personal decision and these steps should be undertaken only as last options.
· Plan out. Before the shooter enters the room, decide among others in room who will be distractors by throwing books and other items at shooter. Decide who will be attackers taking the shooter down.
· Spread out. Do not cluster together. Move around when the shooter enters the room.
If you are outdoors:
· DETERMINE where the shots are coming from
· TAKE COVER
· ASSESS the situation
· FIND an escape route
