How do I learn about vacant positions at UNT?

UNT’s online application website address is jobs.unt.edu and can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection.  Kiosks are also available in the Business Service Center at 1112 Dallas Dr. Ste. 220, Denton, Texas, to view announcements and apply for positions.

How often are postings updated?

Positions are posted for a minimum of 5 calendar days and added or removed from jobs.unt.edu on a daily basis.

How long will my application remain active in the system?

Your application will be active for as long as you continue to apply.

If I am hired, do I have to submit to a Criminal Background check?

Yes, all new hires will complete a Criminal History Authorization form.  The offer of employment is contingent upon a clear result obtained before you begin work at UNT.

Do I have to fill out an application for each position?

No, you create one online application and apply it to those posted vacancies of interest.  It is recommended that you edit your application as needed to reflect and highlight the experience that is most relevant to the position for which you are applying.

Can I save my application before I finish completing it?

You can save the application by clicking on the SAVE AND STAY ON THIS PAGE button. This allows you to return to the application and see data through the last page that was saved even if you have not completed all of the required fields on the page where you left off. If you made any changes to the application since last saving it, you will be given the option to save the changes when exiting the application. The online session will time out after 60 minutes of inactivity. If your session times out, your information will be lost if you have not saved it.

Do I have to complete the "Work Experience", "Education" and "Reference" pages if I plan on attaching my resume?

Yes.  It is recommended that you complete all fields of the application and avoid putting "see resume." Hiring supervisors often initially screen their candidates based on a review of applications alone.

Can I attach a resume/cover letter/references after I receive a confirmation number?

Once you receive a confirmation number, your application has been sent to the hiring department and changes cannot be made.  Please ensure that you have completed your application and attached all necessary documents before submitting.

What happens if I withdraw my application?

Withdrawing your application during the application process removes you from consideration for a position.  The withdraw function is not intended as a mechanism to 'start over.'  Once you have withdrawn your application, you cannot go back and apply your application to that same position again.

What if I don't have my document attachments in an electronic format?

After having applied for a position, you may either hand deliver or send the documents via mail to the attention of the Business Service Center, 1112 Dallas Dr. Ste. 220, Denton, TX.  Please be sure that your name, the Position Title, and Requisition# you would like the documents applied to be clearly printed on the document.

Can I submit my resume for consideration without applying for a job?

No.  You will need to log onto jobs.unt.edu, create an online application and apply for a specific posting.

How can I make changes to my application?

Changes can be made to your general application at any time. However, once you submit an application for a particular position, you cannot go back and make changes to the submitted application. Any changes you do make to your application will be included for any new position for which you apply.

How do I submit an application if I don’t have a computer and/or I cannot type?

Computers are available, M-F 8-5, in the Business Service Center office located at 1112 Dallas Dr. Ste. 220, Denton, TX.  Visit your local Texas Workforce Commission, any public library or any computer with internet access.  The Business Service Center cannot input the data for you; however, you may bring someone to assist you.

Can I use a false social security number for my application?

No, please contact the Business Service Center at 940-369-5500 and a pseudo social security number will be given for the online application system.  In the event you are hired, your actual number will be required.

Do I have to provide an official transcript?

If the position requires a degree or if college education is a factor in qualifying for the position, an official transcript will be required upon employment.

Will the Business Service Center automatically refer my application to the departments as positions become available?

No, it is up to the applicant to review new postings and apply for those of interest.

Can my college hours be substituted for experience, and vice versa?

In some instances, hiring departments will accept substitutions for experience and education.  Every 30 hours of college can substituted for one year of experience. Every year of experience can substitute for one year of college. Please review the minimum qualifications for each position for these details.

When will I hear back from the department?

When you apply for a posting and receive a confirmation number, your application is submitted in real time to the hiring department.  The hiring department will schedule interviews with applicants.

How do I submit my veteran’s preference information?

Complete the UNT Veteran’s Status/Veteran’s Employment Preference form and submit a copy of your DD214.  You may attach the form yourself or submit it to the Business Service Center.

How can I check the status of my application?

After logging in, click on "Positions for Which I Have Applied" located in the left menu bar. There will be a status of either 1) In Process - Position is still open and based on your skills/qualifications, you may or may not be contacted for an interview or 2) Position Filled - another candidate has been hired.

What if I forget my username and password?

On the Login page of the UNT Career Site, click "I Forgot My Username/Password" link, or you may contact the Business Service Center at 940-369-5500 between the hours of 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

How do I print my application?

Before submitting your application, you will have the option to view it. When your application opens in a new browser window, using the tool bar at the top of your computer screen, click on File and then on Print, and follow the prompts on the screen to print your application.

What is the process for posting an existing position?

Complete a HRM-5 form, submit a UPO-31 (Planning Guide) and acquire the necessary signatures for approval. Send the completed/signed forms to Human Resources.  Depending on the situation, a HRM-4 may also be required.  Please refer to the Recruitment Toolkit on the HR website for further guidance.

How can the department representative print the new hire’s application?

Log onto the system (jobs.unt.edu/hr) and enter your EUID and Password.  If the position has been removed from the web, click on "View Historical"; click on "View" under the position title and click on "Inactive" and "Refresh".

How do I dispense my applicants?

For those applicants not hired, click on "status change" for each applicant and select a job related reason for not hiring.

How do I submit a short list of applicants?

Change the applicant status to "short list"; click on "confirm" and "save".  The system will automatically send an email to the Business Service Center.  The Business Service Center will review and send a response within 24 hours.

How long will it take for the CHC to be cleared?

Results typically take 3 business days.  However, if the candidate has lived in multiple states/counties and/or has had multiple names, the search can take longer.  International searches can take anywhere from 2 weeks up to 6 months.

Leave Time

How can I find out how much vacation and sick leave I have available right now?

Your vacation balances are available on MyUNT under the Employee tab.  This amount is accurate up to the extent that time used has been entered in EIS.  If you have questions your departmental timekeeper should be able to assist with what time has not yet been entered.

May I use sick leave to care for family members?

In general the answer is yes, though there are some restrictions.  Family member must be related by kinship, adoption, or marriage and residing in the same household.  Minor children do not come under the limitation of residing in the same household.  Foster children may be considered the same as a birth child in certain circumstances.  The use of sick leave to care for family members not residing in the same household is limited to those situations documented by a medical practitioner as requiring the assistance.  Please see UNT Policy 1.4.10.

Do I have to bring a doctor's note if I use sick leave for an absence that lasts less than three days?

Your department official has the right to require that you produce medical documentation any time you are off work due to illness, regardless of the length of the absence.

What happens if I am ill and I run out of sick leave?

When a staff member has exhausted all accrued sick leave, further absences will be charged against vacation and compensatory leave, or may be docked due to disciplinary action (if not covered by FMLA). Once an employee has exhausted all of his leave with pay entitlements, he may be eligible to use the sick leave pool, may be docked, or may request a leave of absence without pay.

Can I give some of my sick leave to another University employee?

No. You may donate an unlimited number of sick leave hours to the University's sick leave pool, but you may not stipulate who is to receive those hours.

Who is considered a family member for purposes of funeral leave, and how long can I be off work?

Employees are allowed to be off work without the loss of regular pay for reason of a death of one of the following family members: The employee's spouse, or the employee's or spouse's parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, children, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law not related by blood to the employee or spouse. The amount of time granted shall usually not exceed three days. Requests for leave for family members not mentioned or for leave in excess of three days must be approved by the President.

Tax-Sheltered Annuity Plan (TSA) & Optional Retirement Plan (ORP)

  1. Who is eligible for ORP?

Who is eligible for ORP?

Full-time faculty, librarians, and certain professionals and administrators are all eligible to enroll in ORP. If you are eligible for ORP you will be sent a welcome letter from the Business Service Center with instructions as to how you should enroll.

Do I have a choice between ORP and TRS (Teacher Retirement System)?

Yes. If you have never enrolled in either plan, you have a 90 day window of opportunity to choose between the two retirement systems. That 90 day window begins with your first day of employment.

If I chose TRS instead of ORP at another agency, am I still eligible for ORP at UNT?

No. Once you opt for TRS instead of ORP you will never be eligible for ORP during any future State of Texas employment. The same is true if you choose ORP over TRS (in most cases). The choice is irrevocable.

If I vested in ORP at another state agency, but am employed at UNT in a non-ORP eligible position, what retirement system will I participate in?

Once you have vested in ORP, you will remain in that system regardless of future positions or State of Texas employers. It is important that you let the Business Service Center know if you have vested in ORP prior to employment at UNT in order to correctly process your paperwork.

If I choose ORP, what percentage of my gross salary will I contribute to the plan?

You will contribute 6.65% of gross salary. In general, the state contributes 6.58% percent to your ORP.

Do I have to use my personal time off (i.e. vacation, floating holiday, etc.) to attend training?

University policy allows employees to attend classes during work hours. Prior supervisory approval is expected for staff employees. Accrued Leave Time does not need to be used to attend training sessions.  UNT Policy 1.3.17

Who can attend training and development classes offered by the Business Service Center?

All faculty, staff, and student employees are eligible to attend training classes. Most classes are offered at no cost. Occasionally, programs are open to spouses and members of the community. Staff members must have the consent of their supervisor to attend programs.
