Sustainability Lecture by Dr. Lisa Tucker and Dr. Anna Marshall-Baker
UNT
Interior Design program hosted a sustainability lecture focusing on the
relationship and connections between research and practice on September 22 and
23, 2017 at the Universities Center Dallas. The title of lecture was Sustainability in the 21st Century: Advances
in Academia and Practice. It was a great success with the audience from interior
design students, faculty, alumni, Advisory Board members and professionals. The
lecture was very appropriate and informative especially for our Grad Track
students as they progress into the MA Program for Sustainability.

LyndaCampus: Expansion of Lynda.com
Access
to Lynda.com simply requires clicking on the green button labeled “Lynda.com Sign In”
and entering a valid UNT EUID and password. Previous users of Lynda.com can
import prior usage history into a UNT profile by following the setup instructions
for computer or mobile devices.
The
University of North Texas has expanded its offering of online training by
making LyndaCampus, a library of thousands of video tutorials, available to all
UNT faculty, staff and currently enrolled students. This expands the
university’s use of Lynda.com, an online resource that offers an extensive
catalog of instructional videos teaching technical, creative and business
skills.
LyndaCampus
provides specific features for higher education and offers thousands of
Lynda.com courses on Microsoft®, Apple® and Adobe® products as well as professional
development areas such as project design and management frameworks, data
analytics and logistics. New videos are added each week with fresh content to
help keep skills current. LyndaCampus also includes closed captioning and
searchable transcripts of the learning material for increased comprehension and
ease of use.

UNT Interior Design MA for Sustainability Program Featured in Earth Day Texas 2017
UNT Interior
Design program participated in Earth Day Texas 2017 at Fair Park Dallas from
April 21st to 23rd. The program showcased graduate students’ sustainable design
projects through displays and videos.

The Interior Design program offers the MA for Sustainability program which prepares students to not only study, but to define and re-invent solutions for the fundamental challenges that impact the interior design profession in an increasingly changing world. The MA for Sustainability is a Grad Track Degree Program at UNT. The Grad Track refers to an accelerated Bachelor’s and Master’s degree program designed to allow highly successful undergraduate students to use graduate courses taken as an undergraduate to apply towards both the graduate and undergraduate degrees.

UNT Design Department Seeking Adjunct Instructors for Interior Design Program
The Department of Design seeks
qualified individuals for its Adjunct Instructor Pool for Interior Design
program and welcomes applicants at any time. This posting is for the Fall 2017,
Spring 2018 and Summer 2018 semesters. The specific courses involved may vary
from semester to semester and openings to teach these courses develop on a
periodic basis, depending on department teaching needs.
Minimum
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree and a minimum of 18
hours of graduate study, in Interior Design or closely related field. Extensive
professional experience in Interior Design can apply if it is directly related
to the particular class.
Preferred
Qualifications:
Terminal masters degree in Interior
Design or closely related field with professional and teaching experience.

ID Faculty Joined IDEC Chicago 2017 Conference
UNT
Interior Design faculty attended the IDEC (Interior Design Educators Council) annual
conference from March 8th through 12th in Chicago, IL in order to expand their
knowledge on sustainable design, research, and education. An ID students’
project done by Sarah Niemeier and Sophia Reza Gutierrez for the IDEC Student
Design Competition was displayed as the Southwest regional finalists at the
conference on Saturday, March 11, 2017. The project was supervised by our faculty, Dr. Zahid Islam.

Cynthia Mohr Received the IDEC Presidential Award
Congratulations!
Cynthia
Mohr, Professor and Chair of the Department of Design, received the
Presidential Award as recognition of her contribution to the IDEC (Interior Design
Educators Council). Most recently, she was elected to serve as President –
Elect 2014-15 and President 2015-16. After attending her first IDEC annual
conference in 1992, Professor Mohr has been an active volunteer serving as
Chair of the Instructional Improvement Committee, Editor of the Innovative
Teaching Manual, Editor of the E-Record, Southwest Regional Chair, and
International Student Competition Coordinator. She has served as a
co-coordinator of the Teaching Collaborative, a critical part of IDEC’s new
organizational structure.

Sarah Niemeier and Sophia Reza Gutierrez Selected As Southwest Regional Finalists for 2016-2017 IDEC STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION
Congratulations!
Two UNT Interior Design students, Sarah Niemeier and Sophia Reza Gutierrez have been selected as Southwest regional finalists for 2016-2017 IDEC Student Design Competition. The project
was supervised by our faculty, Dr. Zahid Islam. There were 109 submissions from
40 different programs. The judges were highly impressed with the design ideas
that were presented in the submissions, and it was highly competitive. The
results of the annual competition will be announced at the IDEC conference in
Chicago on Saturday, March 11, 2017.

You can do that by taking the IDFX ONLY exam.
And, as
an added benefit, IDFX ONLY approved applicants are given a special IDFX ONLY timeline
of 4 exam windows (which begins immediately following their application approval)
to successfully take and pass the Fundamentals Exam. Passing IDFX ONLY scores will
remain valid while you earn the required work experience necessary to finish
the certification process by passing the Professional (IDPX) and Practicum
(PRAC) sections of the exam.

ART Building After-Hour Access (Note: Accessible with ID CARD ONLY)
From
October 10th, CVAD will activate the swipe card readers on the exterior of the
Art Building. CVAD students, faculty and staff will have the ability to swipe
into the Art Building for after-hours access.
Weekdays After-Hour starting at 11 pm (ART Building)
Weekends After-Hour starting at 10 pm (ART Building)
The Art
Building will have a building monitor scheduled to work weekdays from 5pm –
11pm and weekends from noon – 5pm. Another Building monitor will be scheduled
to work in the Welch St. modular until 10pm during weekends. That monitor will
provide support to the Art Building as needed. The ART building will
automatically lock after the building monitors shift and access will only be
granted through the swipe card readers.
Students,
to be granted access to the building you must be enrolled in a CVAD course.
Also, if you are a returning student and your UNT ID card is older than 5 years
you may need a new UNT ID card. Please visit Student Accounting and University
Cashiering Services at the Eagle Student Services Center to receive a new UNT
ID card.
How to
get your UNT Student ID card
1. Go
to the 1st Floor of the Eagle Student Services Center on the Denton Campus. ID
Systems is located at the Student Accounting office, room 105.
2.
Provide us with your UNT EMPL ID Number (8 Digit Number that students can
locate online at my.unt.edu by clicking on "Student Center" and then
"Demographic Data" under the "Personal Information"
section). Let us know which card works best for you.
3.
Students selecting the Standard Card will have their picture taken and will
receive their ID card.
CVAD
Students, faculty and staff that are unable to swipe into the building
after-hours next week with a current UNT ID card will need to visit the key
shop on campus. The key shop is located on the NE corner of Sycamore Hall and
can only be accessed from the exterior of the building. The key shop will
verify that the magnetic swipe on the back of your ID card is coded correctly.
The key shop hours are Monday – Friday 8am-5pm.
The
following rooms will remain locked after the posted hours or last scheduled
class.

UNT ID Seniors Showcased Projects at HKS
Emma
Marland, Carlie McClure, and Carmel Quemado showed off their senior projects at
HKS Dallas. The collaborative project completed by Carlie, Emma and Carmel was
a “first” for the senior show and was very well received and impressed from the Senior Show and HKS. They
have represented UNT very well and we appreciate support from HKS.

2016 UNT Interior Design Senior Show
2016 Senior Show of Interior
Design program in the College of Visual Arts & Design (CVAD) at the
University of North Texas (UNT) was held during May 4th through 7th in the Lightwell
and North Galleries at the UNT Art Building. This Senior Show was an annual
design showcase of senior students’ research-based final projects which are,
not limited to, residential, commercial, hospitality, and healthcare design. The
reception started at the Lightwell from 5:30pm May 7th.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The MA
for Sustainability program offers holistic learning processes of interior
design with an emphasis on sustainability. The program strives to nurture and
advance interior designers’ professional design knowledge and skills in
sustainable design. The program strengthens and supports the knowledge, skills,
and techniques necessary in competent interior design practice while providing
the profound exploration of sustainable design. This includes proficiencies
that address sustainable project management practices, research methods,
problem solving, critical thinking, graphic and written communication, ethics,
and social responsibility.
CURRICULAR OBJECTIVES
The
curricular objectives of the MA for Sustainability program are to improve our
graduates’ abilities to:

understand the concept and history of sustainability
•
understand work ethics and social responsibility
•
understand research foundation and methodologies
•
critically review literature relevant to their project/research topics
•
identify and develop their project/research agenda
•
investigate self-elected questions by means of research
•
specialize and expand their body of knowledge for sustainability
•
manage sustainable design projects professionally
•
demonstrate effective writing and presentation skills for knowledge exchange
•
understand the global impact of sustainable design on individuals, groups and
society
• work
in a collaborative environment
The MA
in Sustainability candidates are expected to develop sustainable projects and
plan a course of investigation that leads to the discovery of new insights into
sustainable built environments. This graduate level investigation includes both
studio work and scholarly investigation using the research process.

Lindsey Torpey Featured on IIDA Newsletter

Torpey, UNT Interior Design senior pressed her perspective of advocacy in
regards to interior design licensure on the QUAD, which is IIDA Quarterly
Student Newsletter. Lindsey serves as IIDA Student Representative to the Board
and is pursuing the Master of Arts with Concentration of Interior Design for Sustainability.
