The Office of the Scientific Director (OSD) is responsible for designing, managing, and evaluating NIDDK’s intramural research program (IRP) to support the achievement of the Institute’s broad scientific aims. In support of approximately 850 full-time Federal employees — ranging from lab technicians to NIH Distinguished Investigators — the OSD allocates funds, space, and personnel to ensure the most effective use of public dollars toward high-quality, high-impact research.
The Office also coordinates the evaluation of scientific staff members — based on the Board of Scientific Counselors quadrennial reviews of tenured and tenure-track researchers — and continually refines the structure of the IRP in response to these findings and overall advances in the field.
Driven by a commitment to accountability and transparency, the OSD promotes public access to research findings, ensuring publications are easily available online through PubMed.gov and sponsoring both occasional and ongoing seminars, symposia, and interest group meetings. These events are also part of a broader effort to foster collaborations between members of the intramural research program and their colleagues at other NIH institutes, universities, and industry.
As a senior advisor, Scientific Director Dr. Michael Krause provides guidance to the NIDDK Director on scientific policies and procedures. In addition, he represents the interests of the Institute on a variety of committees that govern research conduct, safety, and training across the NIH.
