Early Hearing Detection And Intervention Program

New Jersey mandated hearing screening of babies with risk factors for late onset or progressive hearing loss in 1980. Universal Newborn Hearing Screening was mandated effective January 2002.

The mission of the New Jersey Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program is to ensure that all New Jersey children receive timely and appropriate screening, diagnosis and intervention for hearing loss.

The New Jersey EHDI program will accomplish this through:

  • Providing insight and technical assistance to birthing facilities
  • Providing education about newborn hearing screening, diagnosis and intervention to families and health care providers
  • Establishment of a confidential registry and tracking system to ensure children are screened, have appropriate follow-up and are linked to services
