Michael F. Bertrand, Regional CommissionerA message from Regional Commissioner Michael F. Bertrand:

Welcome to the Social Security Administration's Boston Region. You can use the Contact Us link to access several options for contacting SSA, including online access at socialsecurity.gov and our toll-free numbers, 1-800-772-1213 and TTY number 1-800-325-0778.

Our Region consists of the six New England states, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, and we have 69 field offices, 1 teleservice center, and 7 Disability Determination Services offices to serve those members of the public who seek our help.

I am extremely proud of the more than 2,000 dedicated federal and state employees in the region who provide efficient and compassionate world class service every single day. They explain the wide array of Social Security benefits, discuss and review the rights and responsibilities associated with those benefits, and ensure that the payments are received timely and in the right amount every month.

Social Security impacts nearly everyone’s life. Whether assigning a Social Security number to a newborn infant, providing a Social Security benefit to a retired or disabled worker, or payments to the survivors of deceased family members, Social Security touches the lives of more Americans than any other federal program.

On a yearly basis, the Boston Region processes over 513,000 new claims for benefits and issues 490,000 Social Security cards. Monthly, more than 2.8 million New Englanders receive over $3.2 billion in Social Security retirement, survivor, or disability benefits. In addition, 347,000 recipients of Supplemental Security Income receive $170 million in benefits each month. Overall, nearly $38.5 billion in benefits is sent to the citizens of New England annually to provide some of their financial security.

We appreciate the trust and reliance you place in our agency. We continuously work hard to keep that trust and to provide world class service each and every time you contact us.

Michael F. Bertrand
Regional Commissioner
