The Illinois Department of Public Health’s Prostate and Testicular Cancer Screening, Education and Awareness Program was created in 1991 (P.A. 91-109). The Office of Health Promotion (OHPm) is responsible for distributing grants funds under this program. The purpose of the program is to support awareness, education and screening applicable to prostate and testicular cancer by public or private entities in Illinois. The early detection of prostate and testicular cancer greatly increases the likelihood of survival and improves quality of life.

Fiscal Year 2008 Heartsaver AED Fund Grant Guidance

Public Act 93-1085 created the Heartsaver AED Fund for the purpose of providing matching grants for the purchase of Automated External Defibrillators (AED). Any public school, public university, public college or public park district, required to have an AED pursuant to the Physical Fitness Facility Medical Emergency Preparedness Act (210 ILCS 74), is eligible to receive a matching grant from the Heartsaver AED Fund. Eligible entities are limited to one matching grant from the Fund. Additional information regarding grant eligibility can be found in the recently adopted HEARTSAVER AED GRANT CODE (77 Ill. Adm. Code 530).

Any Illinois licensed/designated EMS participant that provides EMS service within the State of Illinois may apply for funds through their Regional EMS Advisory Committee.

Penny Severns Breast, Cervical and Ovarian Cancer Research Fund

The Penny Severns Breast, Cervical and Ovarian Cancer Research Fund is a special fund within the state treasury that is used for breast, cervical and ovarian cancer research grants. Revenue sources include general revenue funds, income tax contributions and gifts, as well as grants and awards from private foundations, nonprofit organizations and other governmental entities or persons. Grants support research in areas related to breast, cervical and ovarian cancer prevention, etiology, pathogenesis, early detection, treatment and behavioral sciences. Research also may include clinical trials. Although a majority of the applications submitted are bio-medical in nature, researchers in the fields of behavioral and social sciences also are encouraged to apply.

Women’s Health Initiative Grants

In 1998, the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Office of Women’s Health (OWH) received funding from the Illinois General Assembly to support Women’s Health Initiative Grants to enable communities to begin or to enhance women’s health programming efforts in the areas of outreach, health promotion and education. Consequently, grant priorities are cardiovascular disease, community planning for women’s health, eating disorders/disordered eating, menopause and osteoporosis.

Ticket for the Cure Community Grants

On July 6, 2005, PA 92-0120 was signed into law, creating the Illinois Ticket for the Cure Lottery instant ticket. Net revenue from the sale of this ticket will go to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Office of Women’s Health, which will award grants to public and private entities in Illinois for the purpose of funding breast cancer research, education and services for breast cancer victims. (This application is for community grants related to education and services to breast cancer victims.)
