Education

A high-quality education is critical for our children's future and to America succeeding in the global marketplace. As a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, I will address the important issues like early learning, the rising cost of college tuition and reforming No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Additionally, at a time of high unemployment, I will work to reauthorize workforce training programs that help workers acquire the skills and education they need to succeed.

K-12

In the 112th Congress, I worked with my colleagues on the Education and the Workforce Committee to advance two bills that would reform NCLB: the Student Success Act (H.R. 3989) and the Encouraging Innovation and Effective Teachers Act (H.R. 3990). Together, these two bills would give more control over education back to states and school districts, reduce burdensome federal mandates—such as NCLB’s requirement for Adequate Yearly Progress—and support more effective teachers in the classroom.

Adult Education and Workforce Training

As co-chairman of the Adult Literacy Caucus, I am working to bring attention to the needs of adult learners. In 2003, the U.S. Department of Education found that 93 million adults do not have the literacy skills they need to be successful. We must do more to make sure that Americans have the basic reading skills needed to climb the economic ladder—and to help their children learn.

I also support efforts to reform federal workforce training programs to better help workers and taxpayers. In the last Congress, I was a cosponsor of the Workforce Investment Improvement Act of 2012 (H.R. 4297), which consolidates ineffective programs, cuts bureaucracy, and provide more flexible job training services.
