Green Power Policies

A number of state and local governments have policies in place that encourage the development of green power markets.

  • Government green power purchasing mandates or goals have been established by the federal government, as well as state and local governments to procure renewable energy for the electricity used by government facilities or operations.

  • Community choice aggregation allows communities to determine their electricity generation sources by aggregating the community load and purchasing electricity from an alternate electricity supplier while still receiving transmission and distribution service from their existing provider.

  • Mandatory green power options in some states require utilities to offer a green power option to their consumers.

  • Net metering standards enable customers to use generation from on-site renewable energy systems to offset their consumption over a billing period by allowing their electric meters to turn backwards when they generate electricity in excess of their demand.

  • Environmental disclosure policies provide information to consumers about the environmental impacts of their electricity generation.
