Although the biological cell is the smallest unit of life, it is highly complex because of the many chemical reactions and physical processes that are continuously occurring. The interplay among molecules, between cells, and between cells and their environment are responsible for the outcomes that we observe in living systems. Our work is focused on the quantitative measures of these outcomes and the molecular reasons that these outcomes occur. We provide an infrastructure of measurement methods, and verified measurement standards, data and technologies to support the characterization and understanding of complex biological systems and biomaterials. Our work helps American drug and medical device manufacturers and regulators have confidence in their measures in this ever-more-complex scientific field, so that new products for health care, food safety, environmental health, and national security can be introduced to the market quickly and safely, improving the quality of life of all Americans.
