AFAR Research Grants

AFAR provides up to $100,000 for a one- to two-year award to junior faculty (M.D.s and Ph.D.s) to conduct research that will serve as the basis for longer term research efforts. AFAR-supported investigators study a broad range of biomedical and clinical topics including the causes of cellular senescence, the role of estrogen in the development of osteoporosis, the genetic factors associated with Alzheimer's disease, the effects of nutrition and exercise on the aging process, and much more. Since 1981, over 680 AFAR Research Grants have been awarded. Up to 10 awards will be given in 2013. Application Deadline: December 17, 2012.

The New Investigator Awards in Alzheimer's Disease

Funded by The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation and The Diane and Guilford Glazer Foundation, the major goal of this partnership program is to support important research in areas in which more scientific investigation is needed to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The program also serves to encourage junior investigators in the United States and Israel to pursue research and academic careers in the neurosciences, and Alzheimer's disease in particular. Up to four one- to two-year awards of $100,000 each will be awarded. Application Deadline is December 17, 2012.

Paul Beeson Career Development Awards in Aging Research Program

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), The Atlantic Philanthropies (USA), The John A. Hartford Foundation, the Starr Foundation, the National Institute on Neurological Disorders and Strokes (NINDS) and an anonymous donor are collaborating on this initiative to sustain and promote the research careers of clinically trained individuals who are pursuing research careers in aging.

The Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research

This program encourages outstanding mid-career scientists whose research has the potential for high payoff in advancing our understanding of basic aging. Up to two four-year awards of $550,000 will be awarded. Application Deadline: December 17, 2012

Glenn/AFAR Breakthroughs in Gerontology Award

The goal of the Glenn/AFAR BIG program is to provide timely support to a pilot research program that may be of relatively high risk but which offers significant promise of yielding transforming discoveries in the fundamental biology of aging. Full-time faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher who can demonstrate a strong record of independence are eligible. Two two-year grants of up to $200,000 will be awarded. Ellison Medical Foundation/AFAR Postdoctoral Fellows in Aging Research Program

This program addresses the current concerns about an adequate funding base for postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) who conduct research in the fundamental mechanisms of aging. Postdoctoral fellows at all levels of training are eligible. Up to fifteen one-year fellowships ranging from $47,114 to $55,670 will be awarded. Letter of Intent Deadline: October 17, 2012

Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) Program

The MSTAR Program provides medical students with an enriching experience in aging-related research and geriatrics, under the mentorship of top experts in the field. This program introduces students to research and academic experiences early in their training that they might not otherwise have during medical school. Positive experiences in the MSTAR program have led many physicians-in-training to pursue academic careers in aging, ranging from basic science to clinical research to health services research. They have joined the growing cadre of physicians and scientists whose specialized knowledge and skills are in great demand as our population ages.

Glenn/AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging

The Glenn/AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging have been established in order to continue to attract new generations of talented investigators to the field of aging research. The program is designed to give students enrolled in MD, DO, PhD, or combined-degree programs the opportunity to conduct a three-to-six month research project focused on biomedical research in aging. Up to ten $5,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2013. Application Deadline: January 15, 2013.
