Pandemic Preparedness: January 2007 Update

In conjunction with seasonal influenza (flu) information bulletins, AMH brings you this information concerning PANDEMIC INFLUENZA (FLU) PREPAREDNESS.

WHAT IS INFLUENZA? AND WHAT IS A PANDEMIC?

INFLUENZA is a respiratory infection that can cause serious illness and death. Every year more than 35,000 Americans die from it during flu season which peaks between January and March. It is preventable by immunization at least two weeks prior to exposure.

A PANDEMIC is a global epidemic occurring any time of the year and caused by a new strain of influenza virus to which no one has immunity. There will be NO immunization available against a pandemic virus for at least several months after a pandemic begins.  Seasonal flu shots do not protect recipients from a pandemic flu.  All segments of society will be affected by a pandemic influenza, either through being ill, taking care of someone who is ill, or having to carry a greater responsibility at work or at home. At the present time, there is an AVIAN INFLUENZA (bird flu) virus that scientists believe could become a pandemic  virus. So far, it has only passed from birds (chickens) to humans, mainly in Asia.

Regardless the type of flu, prevention is the best medicine. Prevention includes avoiding sick or exposed individuals, covering coughs, washing hands frequently, staying physically and nutritionally fit, and getting an annual, seasonal flu shot.
