West Berlin, August, 1961: Vice President Lyndon Johnson, U.S. Ambassador to West Germany Walter Dowling and Maj. Gen. Albert Watson II, commanding general of the Berlin Command, take their places for the playing of the national anthem at Tempelhof Airport. Behind them, at left, is retired Gen. Lucius Clay. Johnson was sent by President Kennedy to meet with West German leaders and reassure them of America's support in the wake of the construction of the Berlin Wall a few days earlier. While in the divided city, Johnson greeted 1,500 troops from the 18th Infantry's 1st Battle Group who drove up in a convoy from Mannheim to bolster the U.S. military presence.

They were then to hide out in the forest for three days before returning.

Mrs. Roosevelt, working for a New York newspaper, was to spend three weeks touring the Soviet Union. While there, she interviewed Nikita Khrushchev, but the meeting turned into a debate on human rights, among other issues.

Bush's first European trip as president included a NATO summit and meetings with Pope John Paul II and Queen Elizabeth, among others; prior to this Rhein-Main stop, he had gone on a Rhine River cruise.

Frankfurt, Germany, September 26, 1984: Visitors to the Frankfurt airport frequently encounter actors, musicians, politicians and other celebrities as they move to and from the gates, but the sight of Mother Teresa of Calcutta on the people mover still must have produced more than the usual share of double-takes. The 1979 Nobel Peace Prize winner, noted for her work among the poor and sick, was on her way from Rome to Berlin.

Yokohama, Japan, November, 1979: The Phillie Phanatic looms over Philadelphia's Pete Rose in the on-deck circle during the opening game of an 18-day all-star baseball tour featuring 46 top major leaguers. The National League stars beat the American League in the opener of the series, 11-2, with Phil Niekro of the Braves getting the win and Dave Kingman of the Cubs hitting a two-run homer. The tour included several games between the A.L. and the N.L., and two in which the American big-leaguers faced their Japanese counterparts.

Yokota Air Base, Japan, March, 1973: Sgt. 1.C. Gregorio S. N. Torre brandishes a small brass bell he bought in a Saigon shop as he prepares to board a flight to Travis AFB, Calif., on his way home from Vietnam. "This is my Liberty Bell, man," he said. "It's going to ring out my freedom when I get to Travis." Torre was one of 752 U.S. servicemen who quietly passed through Yokota within a few hours; they were the first of the last American troops to leave South Vietnam.

Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, March, 1966: On their way to Vietnam, where they were to spend 15 days performing for the troops, singer-actress Ann-Margret and her band got a closeup look at a B-52 bomber on an Andersen AFB runway. From left to right are bassist Chuck Day, Ann-Margret, guitarist Johnny Rivers and drummer Mickey Jones. As they were visiting, the entertainers watched as a B-52 returning from a mission over Vietnam made a successful landing in spite of a faulty right rear landing gear.

Frankfurt, Germany, July, 1963: The Nixon family poses after arriving in Frankfurt from Berlin. With former vice president Richard M. Nixon were daughter Julie, wife Pat and daughter Tricia. While in Berlin, Nixon journeyed to the other side of the Wall and talked to East Berliners. His reaction to the East was, "Budapest is a free city compared to this. You have to see it to believe it." As for his future, Nixon told reporters he had "no plans to be a candidate" for political office. Richard Nixon was born 100 years ago today, on January 9, 1913.

Vietnamese family tries to escape fighting, 1968

South Vietnam, May, 1968: A Vietnamese family walks toward central Saigon to escape fighting near Tan Son Nhut air base, on the city's outskirts. South Vietnamese authorities said at noon on May 9 that about 46,000 people had already taken refuge in Saigon since the beginning of a Viet Cong offensive five days earlier; they estimated that another 14,000 would arrive by nightfall.

Helmut Kohl visits U.S. troops at Mainz, 1973

Mainz, Germany, September, 1973: Dr. Helmut Kohl, minister-president of Rheinland-Pfalz, visits U.S. troops at Lee Barracks in Mainz. Kohl, the future German chancellor who was then roughly the equivalent of an American governor, presented a color television to troops of the 1st Brigade, 8th Infantry Division, during his visit. It was the first of five TVs to be given to the 8th ID; personnel at Ramstein Air Base also got one. "What we are trying to accomplish here is for the Americans to have some insight into the ways the Germans live," Kohl said.

In the background is the Myoko amusement park. About 800 U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton, Calif., joined the Japanese troops for the exercise.

Giebelstadt, Germany, January, 1956: A crewman from the Air Force's 1110th Air Support Group gets a boost as he folds the parachute for a hydrogen-filled weather balloon that's about to be launched. As part of a project dubbed Moby Dick, 32 of the 200-foot-high plastic balloons and their instrument packages were released from Giebelstadt toward a "cruising altitude" of 30,000 feet.

Wiesbaden, Germany, January, 1951: Deborah Bigby wasn't the first baby born on New Year's Day, 1951, to the U.S. military community in Germany — two others beat her to it — but she might have been the most photogenic. Here she "poses" with her mom, Louise; dad is T/Sgt. Sidney Bigby of the 1st Radio Relay Squadron at Wiesbaden Air Base. And Deborah wasn't the only "new arrival" in the room; it was also the first Stars and Stripes photo assignment for Red Grandy, who went on to provide the paper with some of its best shots for nearly 40 years.
