Lysosomes: Hotbeds Where Tau Oligomers Seed Aggregation?
26 August 2009. How does a nice (that is, soluble and relatively unstructured) protein like tau end up rigidly locked into paired helical filaments and neurofibrillary tangles?...

Twin Study Suggests Epigenetic Differences in AD
21 August 2009. As is true with getting into college or receiving a job offer, it’s not just pedigree but also life experiences that may determine whether a person will develop Alzheimer disease...

Mitochondria Sag Early in AD Mouse Model
21 August 2009. The energy needs of neurons are prodigious—the brain makes up just a small percentage of the body, yet burns roughly 25 percent of its calories...

Research Brief: MECP2 Gene Variants Take a Piece of Your Mind
21 August 2009. The idea that natural variants of a single gene could substantially influence brain structure might blow your mind...

Cutting-edge Drug Discovery Conference
Don't miss the 10th International Conference on Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery to be held 14-15 September 2009 in Jersey City (across from NYC, on the Hudson). This unique conference brings together academic and industry scientists to accelerate the development of novel drug discovery programs for Alzheimer disease and related dementias. The two-day program includes sessions on Neuroprotection and Prevention (chair, Frank Longo), Anti-Amyloid and Protein Misfolding (chair, Michael Wolfe), Anti-tangles and Frontotemporal Dementia (chair, Jeff Kuret), and Alternative Strategies: New Targets for Alzheimer's Disease Therapy (chair, Diana Shineman). Virginia Lee will deliver a plenary talk on TDP-43 as a New Target for Neurodegenerative Disease. For any questions on registration or exhibits, please contact the Conference Secretariat at +1.773.784.8134 or meetings@worldeventsforum.com.

Glorious sunshine greeted 3,700 visitors in the Austrian capital city of Vienna when they gathered from 11-16 July for the 12th International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease (ICAD), hosted by the Alzheimer's Association. Major news came in the area of genetics, but other areas advanced in smaller increments as well. Check this space for news stories—some brief, some wide-ranging—over the next three weeks.
