Guiding college-bound students
Watch how an Army ROTC scholarship took CPT Michael Pope from combat to communications.
My name is Captain Michael Pope. I’ve been in the Army for nine years now. I’m currently stationed at Santa Clara University as their enrollment officer.
I began my Army career in 1998 when the Army offered me a four-year Army ROTC scholarship to South Carolina State. Once I entered South Carolina State I started pursuing a mechanical engineering technology degree. I completed my degree in 2003.
When I completed my degree I was commissioned into the Army as a second lieutenant and also I came into the Army under the Branch Detail Program.
The Branch Detail Program is essentially where you do a combat arms focused type specialty for two years and then you transition into a more technical specialty.
So I served my first two years as a fire support officer, or a field artillery officer. Essentially what I did was the different fires and indirect fires that the Army has; I did the planning for those.
After my two years was complete I went into communications. As a signal officer my primary purpose is to give a field environment the same functionality that you would have in an office building. So I work with satellites, I provide secret communications, I provide regular internet, I provide printing service, things of that nature.
The first six year of the Army was spent in Hawaii with the 25 ID Infantry Division with the 211 Field Artillery. After finishing up there I came to Santa Clara University in January 2010 as their enrollment officer.
Thus far the enrollment officer position has been the most re warding position for me. The reason for it as I said earlier, the Army offered me a four-year Army ROTC scholarship to attend South Carolina State. So this current position provides me the opportunity to interact with college students and high school college-bound students on a daily basis.
