Arnold F. Stancell is a Former Vice-President Mobil Oil, Emeritus Professor and Turner Leadership Chair at the Georgia Institute of Technology, School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

His faculty appointment followed a 31-year career at Mobil Oil where he was Vice-President of the U.S. oil and natural gas business with major projects in California and offshore Alabama. Subsequently he was Vice-President of oil and natural gas in Europe, the Middle East and Australia. In the Middle East, he initiated and led the development of the now $70 billion joint venture between Mobil and Qatar that is producing and supplying natural gas to markets worldwide.

Prior to his executive service at Mobil, Stancell spent the first ten years of his career in research, where he was awarded nine patents in processes for polyester, polyethylene, and high performance separation membranes by plasma reactions at surfaces. In 1997, he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering, received the American Institute of Chemical Engineers National Award for Chemical Engineering Practice, and in 1992 was named Black Engineer of the Year.

He earned his Bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from the City College of New York and his Doctor of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962, where he was subsequently offered tenure as professor of chemical engineering.

Stancell consulted for the Department of Interior shortly after the BP oil spill and advised on near term steps to improve offshore drilling safety that were announced by President Obama on May 28, 2010. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering Council and the Governing Board of the National Research Council.

He was appointed to the National Science Board in 2011.
