Summary
- Correspondence, election materials, financial papers, genealogical information, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other papers pertaining primarily to Quay's career in Pennsylvania and national politics as a member of the Republican party and the U.S. Senate. Includes correspondence relating to his Republican National Committee chairmanship (1888-1891), his candidacy for chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican state committee (1895), and his bid for the presidency (1896); numerous newspaper clipping service volumes primarily concerning Quay's congressional career; and correspondence, financial and legal papers, and other materials relating to his indictment for conspiracy to misuse state funds (1898-1901). Also includes Quay family correspondence (1787-1942); letters (1861-1862) written by Matthew's brother, Elliot Quay, while serving in the Seventh Ohio Infantry; military records documenting Quay's Civil War service at the battle of Fredericksburg, Va. (1862), and an autograph and photograph album of U.S. senators (1888).
