About the Newsletter
The Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS) is a federal statistical agency within the National Science Foundation. SRS develops and conducts surveys and analyses of the science and engineering (S&E) enterprise and engages in related research projects.SRS disseminates the resulting information and analyses primarily through short reports (InfoBriefs), detailed statistical tables (DSTs), and periodic in-depth special reports. This newsletter contains information on the latest products and publications from SRS. Public Financing of Research and Development, by State: 2006
- Nearly $350 billion was invested in research and development in the United States in 2006
- Government agencies supplied 29%; with the federal government providing almost all public funds spent on R&D
Jump in Fall 2008 Enrollments of First-Time, Full-Time S&E Graduate Students
- Enrollments of first-time, full-time graduate students in science and engineering (S&E) programs reached a record 108,819 in 2008, representing 20.6% of all graduate enrollments in these fields
- For the first time since 2003, first-time enrollment in engineering fields grew faster among U.S. citizens and permanent residents than among foreign students with temporary visas
U.S. Businesses Report 2008 Worldwide R&D Expense of $330 Billion: Findings from New NSF Survey
- Companies located in the United States that have research and development activities—both U.S.-owned businesses and U.S. affiliates of foreign parents—reported worldwide sales of $11 trillion in calendar year 2008 and worldwide R&D expenses of $330 billion
- These figures are from the first Business R&D and Innovation Survey (BRDIS), developed jointly by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Census Bureau
Employment in Science and Engineering Occupations Reached 5.8 million in 2008
- S&E employment grew at an average annual rate of 3.3% from 2004 to 2008, almost three times faster than the 1.3% growth rate in all occupations
- Median annual earnings for individuals in S&E occupations were $72,940, compared with $32,390 for all occupations
Interdisciplinary Dissertation Research
- From 2001 to 2008, roughly a quarter to a third of individuals earning doctorates in U.S. universities reported that their dissertation research spanned multiple disciplines
- Doctorate recipients in the agricultural sciences, biological sciences, and earth, atmospheric, and ocean sciences were the most likely to report interdisciplinary dissertation research
Recovery Act Funding Boosts FY 2009 Federal R&D to an Estimated $157 Billion, 12% over FY 2008 Total
- Federal agencies reported an FY 2009 preliminary total budget authority of $157 billion for federally funded R&D: $142.5 billion for FY 2009 R&D budget authority and $14.7 billion for FY 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds (ARRA, the economic stimulus package enacted by Congress in February 2009)
- Just over half of the R&D budget went to defense functions
New NSF Estimates Indicate that U.S. R&D Spending Continued to Grow in 2008
- Total U.S. R&D expenditures totaled $397.6 billion in 2008, up 6.7% over the previous year and about double the growth in gross domestic product
- The business sector reported the largest expenditures among performers and funders
Indicators of U.S. Small Business's Role in R&D
- Between 2003 and 2007 R&D performance by small U.S. companies (fewer than 500 employees) grew slightly faster than R&D performance by larger U.S. companies
- By 2007 R&D spending by small firms was about $50 billion, and small firms held a 19% share of all U.S. industrial R&D
