of Lawndale Community Services Department
The Community Services Department provides a variety of programs
and services to meet the diverse needs of the community. Some
of the department's current programs and events are:
PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION
The mission of the Community Services Department is to provide
quality programs to meet the diverse needs of the community while
advocating a positive environment, the development of character,
and physical and mental wellness and, thus, to improve the quality
of life in Lawndale. The department's services allow community
members to participate in recreational and social activities and
receive a variety of human services in a safe and friendly environment.
TYPICAL
TASKS
The Community Services Department promotes a sense of community
by planning, organizing and coordinating services, programs, classes
and events for families and individuals of all ages.
The parks and recreation
division oversees the day-to-day operations of six parks, playgrounds
and recreational facilities in the city and works closely with
locally-based, private youth sports organizations to provide organizations
such as Lawndale Youth Football and Lawndale Little League field
space for practices and games. City sponsored recreation programs
include:
- Team and individual
activities: youth basketball, youth soccer, tap and ballet,
and karate for children, teens and adults
- Programs for young children:
drawing, pee wee sports
- Programs for
teens and adults: zumba and fitness
Comprehensive senior
programs, which have always been a big part of Lawndale’s
programming, include many service and assistance programs such
as:
- USDA food
assistance program
- Daily lunch program and meals
on wheels
- Case management
services
- Senior transportation
- Small bus excursions
- Computer training
- Monthly special events
- Fitness and exercise classes
Community events
which bring families and individuals together several times per
year continue to be a significant aspect of Lawndale living. Annual
events include the Youth Day Parade, Youth in Government Day,
Volunteer/Sponsorship Recognition Dinner, Health and Safety Fiesta
featuring the Pet Fair, Fireworks Extravaganza, Halloween Haunt
and Angel Tree Lighting.
The department
also overseas the city’s "Lawndale Beat" transportation
system and crossing guard services for the Lawndale Elementary
School District, and produces the city’s quarterly newsletter,
The Lawndalian, which is mailed to all Lawndale residents.
