PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The mission of the Community Services Department is to provide quality programs to meet the diverse needs of the community while advocating a positive environment, the development of character, and physical and mental wellness and, thus, to improve the quality of life in Lawndale. The department's services allow community members to participate in recreational and social activities and receive a variety of human services in a safe and friendly environment.

TYPICAL TASKS
The Community Services Department promotes a sense of community by planning, organizing and coordinating services, programs, classes and events for families and individuals of all ages.

The parks and recreation division oversees the day-to-day operations of six parks, playgrounds and recreational facilities in the city and works closely with locally-based, private youth sports organizations to provide organizations such as Lawndale Youth Football and Lawndale Little League field space for practices and games. City sponsored recreation programs include:

  • Team and individual activities: youth basketball, youth soccer, tap and ballet, and karate for children, teens and adults
  • Programs for young children: drawing, pee wee sports
  • Programs for teens and adults: zumba and fitness

Comprehensive senior programs, which have always been a big part of Lawndale’s programming, include many service and assistance programs such as:

  • USDA food assistance program
  • Daily lunch program and meals on wheels
  • Case management services
  • Senior transportation
  • Small bus excursions
  • Computer training
  • Monthly special events
  • Fitness and exercise classes

Community events which bring families and individuals together several times per year continue to be a significant aspect of Lawndale living. Annual events include the Youth Day Parade, Youth in Government Day, Volunteer/Sponsorship Recognition Dinner, Health and Safety Fiesta featuring the Pet Fair, Fireworks Extravaganza, Halloween Haunt and Angel Tree Lighting.

The department also overseas the city’s "Lawndale Beat" transportation system and crossing guard services for the Lawndale Elementary School District, and produces the city’s quarterly newsletter, The Lawndalian, which is mailed to all Lawndale residents.
